Community-based Bamboo Forest Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of Bitter Bamboo Shoots in Shuanghe Town, Changning County,Sichuan Province
The project intervention regions are located in the national 4A scenic area-"Sichuan Bamboo Sea", which has the world-rare natural bamboo sea ecosystems with the largest concentrated area of China, and the developed tourism industry. For a long time, the foresters in Changning County have gathered under-forest resource, for example, they can dig bamboo shoots and then sold to tourists after simple processing to benefit themselves, which becomes the main economic source of the local forester. The project will addresses biodiversity conservation by promoting sustainable use of bamboo.
Main Problems:
1) Due to a lack of scientific guidance, the farmers often dig large bamboo shoots and leave and foster small ones so that new bamboos are quite small, which will destroy the stand structure of bamboo forest. In addition, the traditional acquisition adopts the hoes for deep digging, which leads to the drop of soil fertility and degeneration of soil productivity so that the integrity of the forest ecosystem is destroyed; At the same time, the huge market demand leads to the over-development of bamboo resources and the increasing pure forest area of single bamboo species;
2) currently, the bamboo product has poor market competitiveness and low added value, and it will leads to the quantity-driven processing and more bamboo shootings to be dug.
Solutions/activities:
1) Carry out the baseline survey;
2) formulate the reasonable sustainable utilization scheme for bitter bamboo shoot forest, and promote new excavation tools to reduce the labor intensity and the degree of damage to the soil;
3) Carry out campaigns for biodiversity conservation in the community, and the targeted related training;
4) For single species management natural bamboo forest with the significant degradation, take comprehensive measures to strengthen the protection of undergrowth, animals and the soil microbial in the bamboo forest;
5) Apply for the certificate of the forest food base;
6)Summarize refined technical measures to guide the production and improve the protection of woodland biological diversity.
Anticipated results/outcomes:
1)Increase the yield and bring forward the shooting duration so as to achieve the sustainable development of the bitter bamboo shoot forests. At the same time, provide more job opportunities to the local women and let more women involved in the project;

3) Improve the bamboo forest ecological environment and the bamboo forest biodiversity;
4) Pass the certification of forest food base;
5) Revise the technical standards for the pollution-free cultivation of bitter bamboo.
