Community Conserved Area Development in Bazhu Village, Yunnan Province
Bazhu village is located within the the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Area, lying between the Langcangjiang (Mekong) River and the Jinshajiang River. It has a population of 1368 persons in 278 households with annual income of $630 per capita. 99% of the villagers are Tibetans. The village is rich in birds, mammals and plants.The local community has their culture and faith which focused on harmony between nature and human.
The project will support the local community to establish CCA and further develop their capacities.
Main problems:
1. High demanding from outside for precious natural resources such as the Chinese yew (Taxus sp.) etc. has placed great pressure on the community and its ecological environment.
2. Religion is the foundation of Bazhu?s traditional culture and conservation, but it is being declined by secularization.
3. The villagers have high expectations of improving their livelihood.
Solutions/activities:
1. Conduct biodiversity, social and economic baseline investigation, demarcation and zoning for establishment of CCA.
2. Develop sustainable livelihood including beekeeping, organic edible rose farming, Chinese herbal Gentiana plantation and eco-tourism.
3.Conduct capacity building to local communities including developing 10 years plan for Bazhu CCA, compiling biodiversity publications,incorporating environmental protection into school curriculum, providing trainings and organizing women patrolling team.
4. Promote project results and share project experiences with wide public.
Anticipated results/outcomes:
1. 900 ha. of forest and territory protected under CCA
2. Local community's income increase $45000 totally through sustainable livelihood
3. 1368 local people informed with biodiversity conservation, sustainable livelihood and CCA knowledge
4. Community's capacity on conservation enhanced.
5. CCA registered and impact expanded to neighboring 25300 ha. of communities.
