Project on Community Conserved Area Development in Diebu County of Mt. Min Area, Gansu Province
The project site is located in Diebu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, western part of Mt. Min, where is characterized by high mountains and deep gorges landscape with wide variation in altitude, steep slopes, turbulent rivers, rich precipitation, high forest coverage, and rich species diversity. It's a home of Giant Panda, golden monkey and other significant species.
The targeted groups are rural villagers with relatively low education levels, little knowledge in biodiversity conservation. They are mainly Tibetan people from agricultural and pastoral areas with annual income of $566.
The project will help the local community to develop CCA and reduce their reliance on natural resources.
Main problems:
1) Local community lacks information on CCA
2) Biodiversity conservation serves little in income generation or development for local communities
3) Communities in this area lack of communication and exchange and the conservation activities are fragmented and isolated.
4) Women seldom participate in the decision-making process and management of village forests and sacred mountains.
Solutions/activities:
1)Conduct baseline surveys to inventory village forests and sacred mountains etc. and mobilize local communities to participate in.
2) Demarcate community conservation areas.
3) Undertake CCA zoning and develop sustainable management regulation
4) Establish woman patrolling team and conduct regular monitoring on CCA
5) Construct energy-efficient stove to reduce fuel consumption
6) Register with ICCA database
7) Establish 6 village level and 1 template conservation organizations and further establish 1 county level conservation organization
8) Provide capacity building training for ICCA and community conservation organizations.
Anticipated results/outcomes:
1) 2292 ha. of village forests, sacred mountains and other territories protected under CCA model and register with ICCA database
2) 72 women participated in conservation patrolling team
3) Reduce 5 tons of firewood per year, equal to reduce 3.5 tons of CO2 emission per year.
4) 2000 people informed of biodiversity conservation knowledge
5) One county level conservation organization registered
6) 36 people trained on ICCA and community conservation organization management
