Murals Against Destruction of Water Resources - Effective Public Participation in the Management of Water Bodies

The Botswana Gourds Association is setting up a project aimed at preparing people of Marico /Limpopo River communities in Kgatleng East such as Mabalane, Sikwane, Mmathubudukwane, Ramonaka,Malolwane ,Olifants Drifts and Ramotlabaki and neighboring settlements in water resource sharing countries, to support and participate in intergraded water conservation activities against destruction of water resources in their areas. The destruction of water resources as well as water pollution is mainly caused by untreated domestic sewage, uncontrolled industrial discharges, poor agricultural practices and deforestation which is mainly the results of human?s action. Innovative education and public awareness regarding saving, protection and conservation of water and water resources are inadequate. The project will be using mural as a tool to disseminate message and sensitize both literate and illiterate humans. It will be run in one pilot area which is the linear settlements along the Marico river which joins to Limpopo, Ngotwane and Orange river streams. We see all waters and international water communities as priority areas to practice conservation methods and education to save water resources and quality because waters are connected and deposit into each other.

Project Characteristics and Results

Policy Impact

? Famers, manufacturers and industries are controlling their waste and pollutants responsibly ? By workshops, road shows and community participation programmes increased awareness ? Banner, t-shirts and posters stimulated the targeted audience ? Use and distribution of promotional materials promoted the rules of conservation ? Mural painting in every key area enhanced dialogue even among the illiterate

Notable Community Participation

? The project involved Department of Environmental Affairs, Water Affairs and co-op implementing stakeholders for project planning and design. ? Local person will be employed to help in identification of walls that are having visibility and smoothness for murals mainly on the roadsides, market places and in suitable distances. ? Some suitable walls are situated in public compounds such as clinics, kgotla, churches and schools ? There is a negotiation between wall owners and BGA for agreements on cost sharing and period of use which will be approximately 5 years and above.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

? The project will also explore partnerships with international water related organizations. This will come in the form of financial and technical assistance. These partnerships will go a long way in ensuring the sustainability of the project and position Botswana as a global leader in water management issues. ? International participation and togetherness in water resource management ? Attraction center for tourists ? Wall owners are benefiting certain free painting ? Well informed nation ? Artists are producing and selling water related art ? T-shirt business sale is increasing ? Clean water for both their livestock and community ? Freedom from anxiety of water pollution, water resource destruction because they are well equipped and educated

Gender Focus

? Women are mural painters also and became artist of environmental conservation as we see them in the project

Capacity - Building Component

Local t-shirt printers business has taken globally recognized branding (Environmental related brands) -Through participation the targeted community people will grow in knowledge of water resource management -They are involved in the design and implementation of water programs -Grassroots groups will possibly replicate the project in other GEF/SGP communities using the same strategies -The unlocked water conservation dialogue between community leaders, stakeholders and community people will create a huge impact and success for future projects

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The project will raise additional funding through institutions that will be advertising at the exhibitions and in the newsletter. Furthermore, opportunities will present themselves for the sale of artwork and writing on walls for business enterprises and other organizations. This will be a sound and innovative way of raising additional funds for the project, especially towards its sustainability.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The results of the project will be shared with the SGP, Water Affairs and the DEA who will utilize it in international platforms and this will also be captured in the Environmental Information System Portal (www.eis.gov.bw) which is accessible globally.

Project Results

1. Though this project, partnerships with other stakeholders have been established, this included;
a. The project proponents have built partnerships with Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) and they are interested in this project and willing to engage further on the project sustainability and where and how they can help since are partners with Water Affairs Botswana.
b. The project team was invited by RESLIM at their office. The proponents made a presentation and at the end they showed interest to work with the team in the future and with possibility of funding for upcoming projects
2. Twenty murals out of a target of 20 were painted on walls in 7 villages in Kgatleng East were painted on walls in Malolwane, Ramonaka, Sikwane, Mmathubudukwane, Oliphant, Mabalane and Ramotlaki and workshops were hosted in the same. The workshops together with the paintings sensitized the communities about water conservation and sustainable use of Madikwe River. In addition to the village leadership and community members in Kgatleng East, Government departments such as Water Affairs, Local Government, Environmental Health and the Sikwane Police also participated in these initiatives.

3. Publicity materials for the project was produced, this included; banner, brochures, t-shirts, posters and other educational materials.

Through the project, both youths and women showed interest by actively participating in the mural painting activities as well as the capacity building workshops at the project sites.
