Marine Turtle Protection Campaign in Tarrafal Monte Trigo
Marine Turtle Protection Campaign in Tarrafal Monte Trigo
The marine turtle population of Cape Verde is among the 11 most endangered on the planet, and this reality is not different in Tarrafal Monte Trigo island of Santo Antao. In this local community, as in other isolated areas of the country, the consumption of turtle meat and other uses of this species is still common practice, which collaborates on this negative statistic.
The Project for conservation of marine turtles in Tarrafal, to be implemented by Project Vitó Porto Novo, aims to encourage community members to make Tarrafal protect marine turtle through a participatory approaches, conducting training and awareness sessions, to encourage work youth and women in the monitoring and protection of nesting beaches, and consequently, a decrease in catch rates of marine turtles, while contribution to the income of the families.
