Sustainable Agriculture, Agroforestry and Community Tourism in Millet, Saint Lucia.
This project was described by the National Steering Committee as a "very complicated project" with many parts which must be well integrated to create impacts, and if successful, will become a beacon for rural development in Saint Lucia.
The project has five objectives as follows: (i) ? to reduce soil erosion by introducing sustainable land management practices by the end of the first year of the project; (ii) To establish nature tours and new gastronomic options which will establish new income generating streams in Millet by the end of the project; (iii) To improve and develop the capacity of the MDC to plan and manage projects; and (iv) To improve and develop the capacity of the community and project beneficiaries to benefit from the project in the short, medium and long term by the end of the project.? These objectives when fully realised will contribute to a project goal of introducing and implementing GAP and new sustainable livelihood opportunities which will conserve the environment while creating new employment for the people of Millet and to the outcome of ?sustainable land management principles in use by community as a means of protecting ecosystem services.? The menu of 25 main project tasks are categorised into four (4) broad project activities as follows: (i) Soil Conservation; (ii) Community Tourism; (iii) Capacity Development of organisation; and (iv) Capacity Development of the community.?
An important experiment which will be undertaken as part of this project is a scientific survey followed by the introduction of agouti ranching as an alternative livelihood. This will be the first attempt at introducing such a livelihood and resource management option in Saint Lucia.
