Strengthening Local Community Capacities on REDD+ Issues to Actively Engage in Synergistic Implementation of Sustainable Forest Management in the High Forest Zone of Ghana
The goal of the project is to develop the capacities of civil society organizations in Ghana
to actively engage in synergistic implementation of the REDD+ and other global environmental conventions

a) To build the capacities, skills and knowledge of civil society organizations to support government in the implementation of REDD+
b) to support and improve the effectiveness of CSO engagement in the implementation of REDD+
c) to create public awareness and build information and knowledge platform to facilitate CSO involvement in REDD+ management and implementation.
1.5 Project Components
The project proposed here will be designed to achieve the above objectives through two main components and their subsidiary outcomes and outputs:
a) The first component will catalyze and facilitate more effective CSO engagement in discussion and implementation of REDD+ at the country levels. Work under this component will be aimed at ensuring that CSOs participate actively and constructively in analysis, discussion, and implementation of measures to address REDD+ issues in Ghana through enhanced engagement with the Forestry Commission (REDD Secretariat), and Government GEF and convention focal points. The project will establish CSO collaboration mechanisms with the Forestry Commission and work directly with members of the Climate Action Network-Ghana in at least three districts in the high forest zone. The project will produce guidelines for CSO engagement in policy and programming discussions with REDD+, as well as support the enhanced implementation of the REDD+.

The project will train representatives from participating CSOs in analysis and formulation of policy briefs, project and programme design, presentations, negotiation, and other key skills, and guidelines to promote CSO engagement in implementation of REDD+ through participation in programs and projects. The project will design and implement a training-of-trainers program, supplemented by an e-learning programme, to build the capacities of NGO/CBOs to carry out appropriate approaches, practices and measures to support REDD implementation.
b) The second component will strengthen the use of reliable, high quality information and knowledge by CSOs under the Network. Work under this component the project will assist CSOs to achieve an increased level of understanding and expertise regarding approaches, practices and measures to address REDD+ issues by collating and sharing their knowledge and experience in a systematic and inclusive way. As such, the project will establish and operationalize a national knowledge platform to facilitate sharing of information.

Project output/Results

i. Capacity of at least 20 CSOs enhanced to participate actively and constructively in analysis, discussion and implementation of measures relating to REDD+ through enhanced engagement and partnership with government.
ii. National knowledge platform established, and operational to facilitate sharing of experience and lessons learned from country level to support up-scaling CSO in REDD+ issues

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
Climate Action Network-Ghana believes in a pluralistic approach that values the diversity among both women and men, and as such Gender Mainstreaming was considered during the project design at all areas and levels. They will adhere to the principles of GEF guidelines which enhances female participation in all aspect of socio-economic development. The project recognizes women as most vulnerable and affected by biodiversity loss, and has identified that women are less likely to be part of development projects because of other responsibilities. And as such, the project will adopt a gender sensitive approach where conscious efforts will be made to identify the role of women. To ensure larger participation of women in the project, the recruitment process has targeted at least 60% of women to be hired and trained for project activities. The project will ensure that at least 50% of women are selected to be part of the implementation committee.
