Sustainable community based climate change adaptation and environmental degradation campaign in Agriculture.

The overall objective of the project seeks to contribute in reducing effect of climate change and prevent land degradation in target communities within one year.
Specific objectives are:
I. To build the capacity of at least 20,000 farmers including youth, women and men in climate change mitigation and adaptation measures and organic manures production for vegetable gardens in NBR and CRR in 12 months through the Farmer field school approach.
II. To provide 50,000 tree seedlings to 10 Basic and Secondary Schools and 10 mother clubs in NBR and CRR for increase trees planting.
III. Conduct climate change awareness campaign in NBR and CRR in 12 months to create awareness of side effects of climate change to agriculture
IV. Commercial Exploitation of available opportunities in organic waste recycling and management for sustainable agriculture in 12 months.
V. v) At least 2 commercially viable & sustainable environmental programs initiatives established at community levels
VI. vi) Reduce effects of poor waste management in targeted communities by 20% in 12 months within target areas.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

A one day sensitization and capacity building training brought together community members and resource people of various specialties on environmental issues. global warming and other global climate change issues including international agreements/ protocols were discussed.. The role of these agreements in addressing climate change issues and how local actions contribute to altering the global atmosphere were highlighted. At the end, emphasis was put on how at the local level, communities can contribute to solving global environment issues.

Gender Focus

Both genders in these communities are involve in farming and natural resource exploitation activities. Thus both are targets of the disseminated information on climate change issues. The women dominantly are engaged in vegetable gardening, thus they are the target of the organic manure production training. As both contribute to deforestation albeit in different ways, the proper tree management practice training activities are pre-dominantly for the men, but the information pertaining to deforestation was disseminated to both genders.

Notable Community Participation

Main objective is to contribute to reducing the effect of climate change and prevent land degradation in the beneficiary communities, targeting 20,000 farmers including youth, men and women. The implementing NGO has field workers who work with local community members in all the targeted regions. community sensitization workshops of a participatory nature and knowledge sharing sessions were held in the target communities and attendance was considerable in each community. The communities showed motivation and eagerness to be part of the project once they realized their stake in it both for the short and long term. Local community authorities and VDC members played crucial roles in turn out of the community in all the beneficiary communities.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Many dimensions of the project will indirect impact livelihoods. The knowledge gain on best practice sustainable farming techniques if utilize will inevitable result in improve livelihood. the communities receive training on making organic manure which can be sold commercially to earn income as well as apply on vegetable gardens for increase in both quality and quantity of harvest yield; resulting in improve earnings and livelihood. a portion of the 50,000 trees planted are for commercial purposes, the sale of which will be source of livelihood for the community.

Project sustainability

The information, knowledge and skill gained through the capacity building activities is expected to last a life time. Through knowledge transfer and experience sharing, these skills on organic waste recycling and adaptation of sustainable farming practices are anticipated to be sustained in the communities. Both the economic gains of such practices and a better understanding now of how they contribute to conserving the environment, should serve as motivating factors to continue utilizing the practices.

Capacity - Building Component

With the goal of impacting knowledge on climate change mitigation and adaptation measures in agriculture and low external input sustainable agriculture, capacity building was a primary activity for this project. One day training was held for extension workers to build skills and impact knowledge in climate change related issues. The trained extension workers will then transfer knowledge and disseminate information to the local communities. Training on proper tree management practices and production of organic manure are also being held for the community members.

Project Results

- A baseline survey was completed in the North Bank, West Coast, Central River Regions- North and South to find out the level of understanding and comprehension of people's perception of Climate Change and coping mechanisms. The survey cinvolved 58 participants (34 individual and 24 focus groups) with 40 females and 18 males in total in the target areas.

- A noe-day training workshop was organised on 21st December 2014 at the Wellingara Agricultural training Cntre for extension workers of NaWFA to enhance their capacities on climate change and ways of coping with its adverse effects.

Procurement of seeds for the 50,000 trees is completed. Nursery establishment is in progress.
