Enhancement of coastal biological resources for sustainable fishing through artificial reefs, community bio enterprises, enhancing livelihoods of fishing community in Killai, Cuddalore District
The goal of the project is to enhance the marine fishery resources and improve the socio-economic conditions of the fisher folk. It is emphasized that there is a decline in the stocks of fishery resources in the inshore waters due to over fishing and environmental degradation. Coastal traditional fishermen are suffering due to decline in the fish production and are struggling very hard to come above the poverty line. This activity envisages increasing the bottom hard surface of the inshore area to facilitate the settlement of benthic fauna and flora leading to the increase in the total biological production of the artificial reef area. This facilitates the continued availability of micro organisms such as the eggs and larvae of these benthic fauna and flora attract a large population of fish. Fishes will be available at all the time in the artificial reef and this forms a very good fishing ground for the fishermen. Tamil Nadu Govt. has recognized Pitchavaram in Cuddalore district as one of the important Tourism development area. Every day more than 100 of people are visiting these places to spend their leisure time. These tourists are finding it difficult to get quality food and a place to relax and entertain. Due to this proposed community based eco-tourism program they are providing better services to the customers and in turn, helping the beneficiary groups to generate additional income for their livelihood and also educate tourists for not using plastic goods and be eco friendly.
