About 500 community members (including young boys and girls) will be participating in the project out of which 40% being women.
Awareness material on low carbon technologies of relevance to communities produced in English, Tamil and Kannada will be done. Video and photo documentation of the project process will be done. The information regarding the project will be shared through websites and brochures.
Capacity - Building Component
Awareness programs will be conducted every year in each location with about 100 people attending per program. Demonstration related to sustained incomes and other benefits of the projects will be conducted. Project will also conduct demonstrations positive social, economic and environmental impacts through community involvements.
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
The beneficiaries are not indigenous community
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The project aims at upgrading the technical and enterprise skills of communities in adopting and offering low carbon/ renewable energy technologies. The project will also set up a retail centre called ?SGP-TIDE Energy Store? which will facilitate the communities to become a bridge between (low carbon) technology providers and rural end users (small business, individual, etc). Increase the collective income of the community members by Rs. 1,50,000 during the project. The project will mitigate about 21,800 tons of CO2 during the lifetime of the project which will directly impact about 2500 community members through enhanced income of about USD 50 per month and simultaneously improving their quality of life and health.
Policy Impact
The project will develop links with technology providers, financing partners like rural banks, microfinance institutions). The NGO will develop another linkage with CBOs and NGOs working in clean energy space, particularly with women (organizations like AWAKE). The government can join hands with the NGO in proper execution of the policies/ activities for the betterment of the people (Karnataka & Tamil Nadu).
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The project will engage in activities like awareness creation, skill training, and knowledge sharing with communities. The NGO has established a ?Women?s Technology Park (WTP) at Tumkur district (close to Bangalore Mysore Highway) for conducting awareness and trainings for providing livelihood to rural women.
Gender Focus
The project will ensure that at least half of the community members involved will be women. Special needs of women participants (mobility) would be taken care of through project funds. The Project will operate through the Women Self Help Groups. The communities will be initiated into new livelihood activities and earn additional incomes. The NGO estimates that introduction of energy efficient commercial cook stoves will save about 10 tons of firewood per year and replacement with energy efficient household stoves will save about 0.5 tons of firewood per year per stove, energy efficient lighting solutions contribute to about 0.5 MTs of CO2 mitigation over the life of about 10,000 hours thus improving the quality of life and health of both men and women.
Project Results
* The project had created awareness and sensitization on low carbon products for more than 11000 rural people.
