Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
A wide range of studies on rural development demonstrate that women are less likely to benefit from development initiatives than men, unless special measures are taken to involve them. This problem prevails in ecotourism development projects as well. Since the impact of ecotourism, be it negative or positive will be more felt by women, the involvement of women in ecotourism development will help increase positive impacts like employments and income earning while reducing negative impacts like prostitution.
This project will therefore be very gender sensitive in it entirety. Women will be part of the consultation workshops for project planning and implementation; will form 60% of the members of the site support groups that will be empowered. They will be also form 60 percent of the people that will be employed either as tour guides or work force. Women will also play a lead role in selling of handicrafts; books etc at the gift shop. Women will also be part of the advertisement committee that will be established.
Notable Community Participation
Community participation is needed to improve the relationship between local communities and protected area administrations. This relationship building is perhaps the most difficult aspect of ecotourism since it involves levels of communication and building trust between different cultures.. Therefore this project will ensure the participation of communities at all levels of project implementation. Before the development of this concept, perception survey was conducted to know the needs for ecotourism development in the area.
Project implementation stage: site support groups and communities will be empowered through consultation meetings, training working workshops that will help them to participate fully in the implementation of the ecotourism project. They will also participate by providing labor force during the tree planting process, and the construction of ecotourism center, resting sites within the forest and the clearing and improving on existing trails that are within the forest. Presenting communities with different environmentally- friendly livelihoods for them to select the ones that can better match the local situation in the community is an effective way of ensuring community participation. Communities will be represented on the Advertisement Bommittee who will be charge with responsibility of marketing the ecotourism programme at both national and international level. They will also be represented at the establishment of ecotourism development fund and benefit sharing strategy plan. The communities will be in charge of managing the gift shops with supervision from the programme manager.
Project monitoring and evaluation; the goal of any ecotourism project is to ensure the generation of income while at the same time realizing the conservation goal of the area; that is ecotourism impact both the community and the ecosystem levels.. In the area of monitoring impact on communities, the community people will be in better position to monitor impacts like empowerment and income level, change in youth activities, evidence of non abuse of drugs etc.
