Western Area Peninsula Forest Reserve-Banana Island Biodiversity Conservation Project
The project will develop a detailed biodiversity profile of the Western Area Peninsula Forest Reserve and Banana Island and to estimate carbon stocks of trees as a first step towards conservation. The proposed biodiversity study will include botanical assessments of tree species. This data will enhance a more accurate ground-truthing carbon stock assessment of the forest study area which is necessary for a potential REDD carbon credit programme that will provide a sustainable financial scheme for continued conservation efforts. In addition, plant species of medicinal value will be surveyed and documented and community women trained in traditional medicinal primary health care. Such involvement of women and local communities in the project will serve as impetus for their participation in forest conservation efforts.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
A public information campaign would be undertaken to publicise the project and its achievements through workshops, seminars and brochures. The objective would be to create awareness of project benefits and encourage changes in behaviour with respect to biodiversity conservation. Such a campaign would promote the visibility and hence the replicability of these practices among relevant environmental actors. Efforts at the local level would seek to develop and build understanding and goodwill toward the project's goal. Our efforts would concentrate on local communities around the peninsula.
Knowledge management tools will also be used for dissemination and communication of our projects findings and outcomes.
Print media: Welthungerhilfe (Whh) through the WAPFOR project already has a newspaper published on a regular basis. This medium will be used for sharing project information, resources and news with stakeholders and the wider public.
Publications: Scientific publications will be made out of this study to make our findings known to the wider international scientific community.
Posters containing our key findings will be prepared for public display
Electronic media: The SLBC TV programme ?Enviroscope? is hosted by the chairman of ENFORAC. The project will seek to use this medium to do live discussions about the project. ?We YUS? is also a popular TV programme in Sierra Leone that we will use to disseminate our findings to the wider public.
Capacity - Building Component
Knowledge management strategy will be implemented using knowledge management tools and approaches that will engage both national and international institutions and players. It will drive the project towards identifying opportunities for absorbing lessons learned, best practices and results coming out of the WAPFOR-Banana Island Biodiversity project and to mainstream, as well as disseminate these, through various platforms. Implementation of this strategy is expected to lead to:
i. Increased comprehension by key stakeholders on the work of the WAPFOR-Banana Island project in the area of biodiversity and watershed conservation;
ii. Development and dissemination of WAPFOR-Banana Island Biodiversity project knowledge management materials that will exhibit measurable results that have an impact on Biodiversity conservation and management have been achieved
The strategy identifies key tools for delivering on the knowledge management objective to ensure that increased knowledge on biodiversity conservation in WAPFOR and Banana Island results. This is expected to lead to increased visibility, public awareness and demand for actions to not only prevent deforestation and degradation, but also enhance conservation of terrestrial biodiversity. It will also contribute to the preservation of the wealth of knowledge and experience emerging from the project well beyond its life span.
