The project will target 10 mother support groups with a total membership of 150 women from 3 chiefdoms where mining activities are predominant in Kenema district. The project will set up structures in the target communities and build their capacity in project management; monitoring and evaluation to enable them manage and coordinate project activities at the community level. HEDO will train the communities in land reclamation and proper land management practices to improve on the fertility of the soil to become agriculturally productive again. HEDO will mobilize the mother support groups to construct compost sites for garbage collection which will be used as organic manures for crop production. HEDO will conduct sensitization meetings and radio discussion to raise awareness on the effects of land degradation and environmental protection. HEDO will provide agricultural inputs to the target groups and train them in post harvest loses, processing, preparation and utilization of the food crops

The project will work with different groups of people during implementation including local authorities, councilors, women, men, youths and children. The local authorities are the custodian of culture. They develop by-laws and are the custodian of the laws. The project will work with these local authorities to ensure that communities develop bye- laws supportive of environmental protection. The councilors are the democratically elected representatives of the local people and their participation will promote local support and ownership. The youths, men, women and children will be involved in the training in environmental protection and land reclamation. After going through the training, they will be sensitizing other community members on environmental protection. The young men and women will do the land rehabilitation work and the farming activities.

This project will support the target communities to rehabilitate the degraded land and ensure proper land management practice that will help improve the fertility of the soil for sustainable crop production. The trainings and the agricultural inputs that will be provided by the project will enable the women to produce adequate quantities of the crops so that they can have enough to eat, effectively breast feed their children, provide proper complementary foods to their children as well as to have surplus to sell as way of tackling house hold poverty.
