Improving livelihoods of Nilo Nature Reserve adjacent to local communities through implementation of non consumptive activities
Improving livelihoods of Nilo Nature Reserve adjacent to local communities through implementation of non consumptive activities
Problem Statement:

Nilo Nature Reserve (NNR) was established in 2007. Prior to elevation o Nature Reserve status, Nilo was a forest reserve. As a forest reserve, local communities were allowed to get in for timber, building poles, oil seeds, small animals, wild vegetables, woodfuel and medicinal plants. With the new status, this provision is now withdrawn. To compensate for withdrawal of this provision and to make sure that poaching does not occur, it is proposed under this proposal that local communities surrounding the Reserve be supported to implement income generating activities of non consumptive nature so as to compensate for lost income and prevent poaching. Proposed income generating activities include: Beekeeping; ecotourism, cultural tourism; woodfuel saving stoves; fish farming; dairy goats and vegetable farming.

About the proponent:

The NNR became into operations in 2007. The establishment of NNR followed a successful conservation and development programme, which was undertaken by the Eastern Arc Biodiversity Conservation project. SGP was part of this initiative. The NNR is young. However, it has conservation and project management wealth f expertise4 and experience, which was accumulated over 10 years of its predecessor project.

Project Objective:

To conserve globally significant biodiversity in NNR through providing alternative non-consumptive income generating activities to the adjacent local communities.

Implementation strategy:

? Instill sense and concern for the importance of biodiversity conservation to the local, national and global significance.
? Detrain local communities on their extractive income generating activities
? Retrain local communities on sustainable income generating activities
? Provide local communities with tools and equipment for sustainable income generating activities
? Train local communities on group dynamics, marketing and bookkeeping skills.
