Promotion of local Intervention for Sustainable Land Management in Missungwi
Problem statement:
Missungwi is one of the semi arid areas in Tanzania. Average rainfall is about 700mm. Deforestation is as high as 85%. Land degradation is exacerbated by deforestation, unsustainable agricultural practice, overgrazing all of which lead to excessive soil erosion. The proposed project intends to build capacity of local communities with the view to reversing the trend of land degradation through adoption of soil and water conservation.
About the proponent:
MMISO is a Missungwi based NGO. It was established in 1994 and registered in the same year. The NGO is focused on enhancing community development on a holistic basis. To this end, MMISO promotes conservation agriculture and agribusiness; rural housing and conservation of Lake Victoria Basin as a transboundary ecosystem.
Project Objective:
To build capacity of local communities with the view to promote sustainable land management practices in Missungwi district.
Implementation strategy:
1. Enhance awareness on causes and effects of soil erosion
2. Establish multipurpose tree nurseries to produce seedling for community woodlots and household energy farms
3. Revive traditional practices that prevent and control soil erosion
4. Promote wider adoption of woodfuel efficient cookstoves
5. Establish environmentally friendly income generation activities for demonstration
