Construction of bee products processing and training centre at Hai, Bomang'ombe
Construction of bee products processing and training centre at Hai, Bomang'ombe
CONTEXT
In 2006, COMPACT started a project with the Hai Beekeeping Cooperative Society (HABECO) in order to reduce the negative environmental impacts of beekeeping and to increase the income of the communities engaging in beekeeping practice. While the project has been successful in reducing forest fires and thus reached its environmental conservation target, the income of the communities has only increased moderately. Most beekeepers thus engage inother income generating activities besides beekeeping. HABECO buys the honeycombs from its farmers for 50?000 TSH per bucket, or approx. 2?250 TSH/kg.HABECO then presses the honey and sells it to the packaging company, GFP, for 3?500 TSH per kg.After packaging, GFP sells the honey to the end consumer for 7?000 to 9?000 TSH per kg. By not packaging the honey internally, HABECO misses out on substantial profit (approx. 50% of the market price).

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
1. To establish honey products processing center in order to increase the turnover of beekeepeers

SECONDARY OBJECTIVES
1. To create awareness to farmers to plant high breed coofee which has no dTo enable HABECO to proccess and pack honey to increase the profit ogf honey to beekeepers
2. To build the capacity of Beekeepers in honey handling process.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES
1. To build a processing and packageing honey and other products
2. Training of Beekeepers on handling and packaging honey products
3. Increase the capacity of HABECO in collecting honey form Beekeepers around Mt. Kilimanjaro.

PROJECT OUTPUT
? Constructed honeu handling and processing center
? Increased amount of honey collected from beekeepers around Mt. Kilimanjro
? Increased income of bekeepers througth selling of final products rather then raw honey
? The processing center will have information about honey and beekeeping materilas which will increase the knowledhe of the beekeepers.

COMENTS FROM LCB
1. The proponent should provide current data of the amount of honey collection at the center
2. They should provide the list of machine needed, capacity of the machines and where they will purchase them
3. The proponent should contribute the land for construction of the building and if possible provide all the documents needed
4. If possible HABECO should explore the possibility of using existing building from a group member or from village office buildings.
5. The proponent should make a visit to a processing center in Arusha for them to familiarize which the things needed in the establishment of the processing center.

APPRAISAL REPORT:

During the appraisal it has been identified that equipments are more important than a building. Visiting other processing center show that packaging honey requires a clean room rather than a building. So there is no need of a building which has a training hall, farmers can be trained on a rented hall.

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Beekeeping will provide sustainable livelihood. In beekeeping tree planting and agro forest is important component. beekeeping also reduced the incidence of forest fire> Forest fire has been associated with improper honey harvesting practices. Modern beekeeping provided equipment which reduced incident of forest fires. Investment in beekeeping has no risk like in agriculture hence provide sustainable livelihood.
Project sustainability
The Project will be sustainable as it has a strong component of training by doing. the project sustainability also lies on the fact that the project produces and sell honey.
