Development of Productive Economic Unit and Alternative Energy in Village Microeconomics Institution based on Conservation at Potorono Mountain and Mount Sumbing
GOAL
By the end of the project, there are demonstration plots of conservation area, indicate by the development of community's forest and orchard, also energy self-sufficient village
OBJECTIVES
Objective 1 : Increasing support from many parties for the micro-economic development efforts based-on conservation at Potorono Mountain and Mount Sumbing in October 2013
Indicators : 1. The support and involvement of related institutions from regency government (Forestry and Agricultural Agency, Animal Husbandry Agency, the Regent, and Local Parliaments) also village government to the program, in the form of policy and technical support for conservation.
2. The participation of many parties (including women) on the implementation of the programs or at least 1/3 of total participants are women, (Photo documentation of activities).
3. There are three samples of productive livestock business groups with a list of eco-friendly livestocks (photo documentation of livestock business).
4. At least there is one micro-economic institution that is integrated with livestock management.
Activities : 1. Program Dissemination through Village-level Meeting
This activity will be executed in series in the 3targeted villages in the first month of the program by involving village government, community representatives and farmers. It will involve at least 30 people, held at the village hall by program presentations and discussion. Output of activities: Programs are being disseminated at the village level where the program is located, also village government's support in the form of a memorandum of understanding of program implementation.
2. Program Dissemination through Stakeholder Meeting
This activity will be carried out at the level of policy makers. Dissemination on the regency level will be carried out in the first month of the program by involving related regional working unit/SKPD (Forestry and Plantations agency, Fisheries agency, Livestock and Agriculture; Environmental Agency; the Regent and Local Parliaments), and 6 community representatives from the sites. It will involve at least 30 people, held at the Regent Office by giving program presentations and discussion. Output of activities: (1) Programs are being disseminated at regency level with the existence of memorandum of understanding of program implementation. (2) Support from local governments in the form of facilitation for program implementation.
3. Comparative studies of cattle breeding farmers to Boyolali cattle breeding center, as an eco-friendly business
This comparative study is intended to increase the understanding of farmers in the sites about the advantages and disadvantages of farming systems in groups. Participants of comparative study will be 45 farmers from the three program sites and 5 representatives of SKPD regency. The activity is planned to be executed in the second month of the program. Output of activities: (1) Increasing community knowledge related to environmental and economic aspects in cattle management. (2) Network of environmentally friendly breeder/farmers is facilitated.
4. Management Training of Cattle Farming (Technical, Management and Marketing).
Training will be held in the three sites by involving at least 40 representatives of local farmers as the agents. It will be a full day training, held in the village hall of the three villages of program site. This training activities will be executed in the second month of the programs. Output of activities: improvement of community's technical capacity in cattle management.
5. Implementation of Groups' Cattle Farming in 3 Villages.
The implementation activity will be carried out in one location in each 3 villages of program sites, by facilitating the development and formation of farming group and stimulus of group farming. The activities will be executed in the third, fourth and fifth month of the programs. Output of activities: (1) The formation of communal livestock farming demonstration plot. (2) The formation of communal demonstration plots for livestock farming lessons.
6. Mentoring and Consultation of Technical and Managerial Aspects.
These mentoring and consultation are post-training activities to support the implementation of group farming activities in a technical and managerial aspects by a trainer. It is intended to optimize group farming process so that they get the best results. It will be executed 2 times in each farming group in the fifth and eighth months of the program. Output of activities: (1) Increasing technical and managerial skills of the groups in livestock farming.
Objective 2 : Demonstration plots construction of biogas reactor in the three villages of program sites In August 2014, as an example of communal alternative energy to meet the need of household energy
Indicators : 1.The development of three biogas sample units in each program sites.
2.The formation of 3 institutional units of biogas management groups that have been educated and trained at the 3 villages of program sites. These biogas institution will then be on duty to accommodate and encourage the development of other communal biogas units in each village of program sites.
3.The involvement of women in biogas development activities for at least 1/3 of the total participants.
Activities : 1. Comparative studies of Biogas Management and Manufacturing in East Java.
This activity is intended to see first hand, learn and exchange information on the development of biogas models either for communal or house/individual scale, including the management and distribution of the development to whole community. The target of the activity is 45 representatives of the farming groups that have been arranged. This will be carried out in the sixth month of the program. Output of activities: (1) Increasing community knowledge in the utilization of livestock waste. (2) Increasing community knowledge to implement environmentally friendly livestock farming
2. Training and Implementation, also Trying-out the Three Demonstration Plots of Biogas Units in Each Village
These activities will be carried out in series in the 3 villages of program sites. The target of these activities is the farming groups that have been initiated, including women involvement in each sessions. Target participants are a minimum of 40 people from each program sites. It will be executed in the seventh, eighth and ninth month of the program. Output of activities: (1) Increasing group capacity in managing livestock waste. (2) Income improvement of the groups with the existence of biogas. (3) Improvement of farming by the utilization of ready to use organic fertilizer.
3. Facilitating the Formation of Three Institutions of Energy Self-Sufficient Village.
This activity is intended to encourage the formation of communal institutions in the three villages of program sites in accommodating energy consumption including their productive economy. The target of this activity is the farming groups from the three program sites. It will be carried out in the third and fourth month of the program. Output of activities: (1) The formation of three institutions that adopt energy self sufficiency. (2) The formation of 3 institutional agents at village-level to encourage the use of bio-energy.
Objective 3 : Increasing conservation-based communal farming culture
Indicators : 1. Increasing community understanding, characterized by the development of hard-wood crops by community.
2. Increasingcommunity business development area which based on communal forest or orchard from 25 hectares to be at least 100 hectares (It is currently being sought for).
3.The development of agricultural lands that considers conservation aspect at the three conservation-based agriculture demonstration plot locations with TAB (trees along border) models as large as 45 hectares.
4.The existence of new farmer groups oriented to the development of conservation-based farming for at least three farmers groups.
Activities : 1. Developing agrosilvopastural community's demonstration plot at the 3 locations of assisted villages.
This activity is carried out in each village of program sites with a target of at least 50 hectares of land, involving at least 200 families of farmers-breeders. It will be executed in the thirteenth till fifteenth month of the programs. Output of activities: the formation of agrosivopastural demplot at each locations involving 200 families.
2.Agrosilvopastural management training.
Agrosilvopastural management training is a supporting activities to enhance technical capacity of farmers in managing farming businesses. The target of the training is at least 30 farmers and breeders in each locations. It will be carried out in the eleventh and twelfth month of the program. Output of activities: (1) At least 90 people are educated in conducting agrosilvopastural activity (2) An agrosilvopastural management group planning document is compiled.
3.Institutionalization facilitation and business analysis based-on agrosilvopastural.
This activity is intended to improve the conventional farming management that has been run by the local community. Target participants are a minimum of 30 farmers and breedersfrom each program sites. It will be executed in the sixteenth and seventeenth month of the programs. Output of activities: (1) The formation of at least one institutional group which try to implement agrosilvopastural farming (2) The compilation of document model on a participatory agrosilvopastural planning
Objective 4 : Lesson learned of conservation-based micro-productive economy development and alternative energy
Indicators : The compilation of lesson learned documents of conservation-based micro-productive economy development and alternative energy
Activities : 1. Monitoring and evaluation activity
This activity is intended to see the progress of the program by involving stakeholders and the GEF-SGP. It will be executed 2 times in the middle of the ongoing program (on the ninth month) and at the end of the program (eighteenth month). Output of activities: progress of activities, control and management of activities, program learning.
2. Reporting and lesson learned programs
This activity is intended to document all the activities that have been performed as a lesson learn and success stories in implementing the program. It will be executed every 3 months and then compiled into lessons learned documents in the seventeenth and eighteenth month of the program.
EXPECTED OUTPUT
1. Rehabilitation of the southern slope of Mount Sumbing and preservation of local biodiversity.
2. Increasing capacity and knowledge of the community in doing farming business based on natural sustainability which is supported by community's behavioral change.
3. Increasing economic income of the community by doing conservation-based farming business.
4. Larger farming areas which apply agroforestry planting pattern that combine timber, crops and grass as a conservation-based farming business.
5. Energy efficiency in the 3 village sites and the lessening of pressure to state forests (natural forest and limited production forest of State-owned forest enterprise/Perhutani)
Participants and/or Project Beneficiaries
Direct : Three groups of people (240 families/with ratio of 500 women : 230 men) in three villages. Total = 15,479 households (the majority are women/67%).
Indirect : The villagers who live around sub watershed area of Tangsi-Progo, covering more than 18,000 families in 14 villages.
