Restoring The Quality of Land and Improving Livelihood by Empowering Youth Farmers
GOAL
The formation of Youth Farmer group (male and female) to improve the quality of land and sustainable food production to create sustainable livelihoods through strengthening the youth farmer group in Bantul as the actor by implementation food production system and developing sustainable local economic system.
OBJECTIVES
Objective 1 : The awareness of the importance of food systems and sustainable agriculture practices among young farmers who manage small farming area
Indicators : 1. Documentations of activities (attendance, photographs, records of village meetings
2. Collected data on the situation in the ground, records of indigenous knowledge and wisdom in managing small farming land including how to maintain soil fertility, as a material for broader policy or a matter of sharing information.
3. A proposal for Village Regulation that support sustainable farming practices
Activities : 1. Village Meeting.
2. Conducting Efforts on Policy Change.
3. Workshop on Sustainable Food Systems, starting with the support for sustainable agriculture.
4. Lobbying to the related local government.
Objective 2 : Ecosystem improvement of small scale farming land, including the restoration of land quality and the improvement of small scale farming management capacity in order to support better livelihood as well as to provide initial capital for improving land quality
Indicators : 1. Attendance lists, photographs, records of every meeting and training activities.
2. Demonstration plots (demplot) in 5 villages with minimum square of 1 hectare.
3. A composting house in each village.
4. Experimental result such as compost, fertilizer that can be used by farmers of the 5 villages.
Activities : 1. Making Demonstration Plot.
2. Composting Training.
It will begin after March 2013, on how to make good compost by utilizing existing resources in each village.
3. Composting Practice and Building composting house.
4. Nursery Training.
5. Training on Fertilizer Production.
Each training is done at the demonstration plot, so the total of trainings will be at least 15 times.
Objective 3 : There will be youth groups who understand and implement sustainable agricultural systems and utilize local resources as foundation for improving community's economic security as well as for increasing the quality of farm land ecosystems by applying sustainable land management practices
Indicators : 1. There are at least five groups of young farmers being formed, with members of 10 people each (men and women) in Trirenggo Village, Bantul Subdistrict (Gedongan Sub Village), Sumbermulyo Village, Bambanglipuro District (Kedon Lord and Kedun Kidul Sub Village), Seloharjo Village, Pundong District (Ngreco Sub Village), Gilangharjo Village, Pandak District (Krekah Sub Village), Donotirto Village, Kretek District that have the capacity to manage small farming area, a minimum of 5 hectares in total.
2. By implementing sustainable farming of crops including rice and corns; if each heads of household work on 1,000 m2 of land and assuming all harvest is sold, there will be an increase of income of Rp 500,000 per month (or Rp 2 million per harvest).
3. Reports of farming mapping result.
4. Suggestions on product that will be later developed.
Activities : 1. Farming Mapping
This mapping will be based on local resources that have the potential to be developed as community business. Starting in February 2013 in each village.
2. Training Series
The training series consist of the utilization of local resources in production process, business analysis, post-harvest handling, harvest processing, marketing access and information technology.
3. Production Practices
This is according to the result of mapping and trainings (related to the activities of the aforementioned training series)
Objective 4 : The strengthening of market access by the establishment of solidarity among small-scale youth producers with consumers in especially urban area
Indicators : 1. There are economic institutions based on youth farmer groups that manage the sales and marketing of harvest from their small farming lands in Trirenggo Village, Bantul District (Gedongan Sub Village), Sumbermulyo Village, Bambanglipuro Subdistrict (Kedon Lord and Kedun Kidul Sub Villages), Seloharjo Village, Pundong District (Ngreco Sub Village), Gilangharjo Village, Pandak District (Krekah Sub Village), Donotirto Village, Kretek District. They will form technical groups at first, and later economic institutions. So the initial phase is technical mastery, then the strengthening of economic institutions, because different skills are needed related to marketing management.
2. There are sustainable storing places (barns) for storing, processing, and distributing of at least 500 kg per month of harvest to be marketed (beyond subsistence), after 18 months.
Activities : 1. Promotion of sustainable agriculture products
This activity is to promote agricultural products that is produced by young farmer groups through product labeling and dissemination of information in the means of leaflets, so that the community will be informed that there are food products produced by a group of young farmers who implement sustainable agricultural systems. This economic activity can be performed after the first growing season in 2013, around the beginning of 2nd semester, after July 2013.
2. Product Exhibition
This is a products exhibition of young farmers who dedicate themselves to the fullfilment of healthy food for community. This is an event to introduce the efforts of youth farmers groups in strengthening sustainable food system, restoring land quality and maintaining land for staple crops.
EXPECTED OUTPUT
1. Awareness raising of young farmers in Trirenggo Village, Bantul District (Gedongan Sub Village), Sumbermulyo Village, Bambanglipuro District (Kedon Lord and Kedun Kidul Sub Villages), Seloharjo Village, Pundong District (Ngreco Sub Village), Gilangharjo Village, Pandak District (Krekah Sub Village), Donotirto Village, Kretek District, with Dowaluh Village as learning center, so that there will be five groups of young farmers that have the ability and means of sustainable agricultural production.
2. There will be five locations of demplot which will implement sustainable agricultural system, with an area of 1 hectare (each groups consist of 10 people).
3. An increase in revenue of the 5 groups of young farmers, who can provide 500 kg of healthy rice per month.
4. There is a model of sustainable food and agricultural area as an effort to encourage young farmers to return to farming, as well as a model for policy changing.
5. There is a documentation of the role of young farmer and local community wisdom to cultivate small farming land that conserve natural resources and it is communicated widely.
6. Consumers get more healthy rice products processed by young farmers in Bantul.
PARTICIPANTS AND/OR PROJECT BENEFIACIARIES
DIRECT : 1. The five groups of young farmers in Trirenggo Village, Bantul District (Gedongan Sub Village), Sumbermulyo Village, Bambanglipuro District (Kedon Lord and Kedun Kidul Sub Villages), Seloharjo Village, Pundong District (Ngreco Sub Village), Gilangharjo Village, Pandak District (Krekah Sub Village), Donotirto Village, Kretek District; wherein each target area was initially 10 families, thus totaling 50 families. Each family consists maximally of 4 people because it is young farmer family, with men and women ratio of 50:50. Incorporated in the groups are young farmers whose lands are small, also called small-scale food producers.
2. Perkumpulan Indonesia Berseru and Lumbung Tani Lestari.
INDIRECT : Communities around Trirenggo Village, Bantul District (Gedongan Sub Village), Sumbermulyo Village, Bambanglipuro District (Kedon Lord and Kedun Kidul Sub Villages), Seloharjo Village, Pundong District (Ngreco Sub Village), Gilangharjo Village, Pandak District (Krekah Sub Village), Donotirto Village, Kretek District, where in each village or sub village there are at least 100 heads of households, and also consumers who get healthy food products (rice) produced in a sustainable manner.
