Merbabu Mountain Land Conservation
Merbabu Mountain Land Conservation
GOAL
Paguyuban Petani Merbabu is able to conserve the Merbabu Mountain independently, comprehensively, based on local resources, and sustainably.
OBJECTIVES
Objective 1 : The farmers group become stronger and able to conserve the land and home garden independently and collaboratively
Indicators : 1. 30 hectares of plantation are planted with hard trees (such as Acacia, Pine, Mahogany, Sengon, Surian) and the 12 hectares of area are planted with fruit trees (Orange, Guava, Apple, Grape). These areas are spread between the areas owned by group?s members.
2. At least 30 agents from Farmer?s Group have knowledge and skills to conserve the land in their own area.
3. Documents to guide the land and home garden conservation, including the community-based forest management, are available.
4. Strengthening the organization and farmer?s group by increasing their economical condition and community participation.
Activities : 1. Reforestation in Home Plantation and Home Garden
The total area for reforestation is 42 hectares. 12 hectares of them will be planted with fruit trees and the rest of 30 hectares area will be planted with hardwood. The size and types of areas to be planted are based on early identification done by PPM and farmer?s group representative.
2. Capacity Building for Reforestation
This workshop will be done in one day in January in PPM Secretariat and the participants will consist of PPM staffs and 44 representatives from 22 farmer?s group of PPM members. It will be facilitated by PPM team. The target of this workshop is the farmer?s group agents of 50 persons. Since most of these farmers already know of the maintenance of hardwood and fruit trees, the workshop will focus more on the sharing on the importance of reforestation, hardwood and fruit trees management and utilization, and sharing experiences and challenges during the maintenance phase.
3. Facilitation for Maintaining and Utilizing Hardwood and Fruits
The facilitation will be done integrally with routine activities of PPM during facilitation of farmer?s group by PPM team. PPM will monitor the number and condition of the plants and its utilization by having direct visit.
4. Increasing Economical Condition of Group?s Members by Developing Potentials within Groups (Revolving Fund Scheme)
This activity is to strengthen the capital for group?s members that already involve to a cooperative but still cant develop their business (seeds nursery, crafts). This usually happens due to lack of economical condition for creating business, such as to buy raw materials for production. This activity will be done regularly per three months starting from February and so on to the group facing challenges with developing their business.
Objective 2 : The community in Merbabu have a space and knowledge for water and land conservation, where it?s managed by applying revolving system in order to disseminate its positive impacts towards the environment in the future
Indicators : 1. Four infiltration wells are build as demonstration in four villages: Genikan, Kedakan, Dekerso, and Derpowangsan.
2. At least 30 agents from farmer?s group have the knowledge regarding the importance of water and land conservation and the construction of infiltration wells.
3. Existing regular meeting to manage infiltration wells.
Activities : 1. Constructing the Infiltration Wells
The infiltration wells are important installation to create environmentally savvy housings. By having the wells, the rainfall and water waste from the house can be infiltrated to the soil so that it won?t stay as runoff water that might create erosion. This is especially important for places with high slopes such as Merbabu Mountain slope. In this activity, four infiltration wells will be constructed in five villages as agreed by PPM, PPM team, and community representatives.
2. Capacity Building for Infiltration Wells
Few of the community in the working area knows the importance of infiltration wells. This activity will be done one day in early May before the construction of the wells and implemented in PPM Secretariat. The participants will consist of PPM staffs and 44 representatives from 22 farmer?s group of PPM members. It will be facilitated by PPM team. The target of this workshop is 50 persons to gain knowledge on the benefit of infiltration wells, its budgeting, and technical aspects of its construction.
3. Facilitation for Arisan (Regular Meeting) to Manage Infiltration Wells
Considering the affordable cost of building the infiltration wells, PPM will facilitate the arisan (regular meeting) to construct the wells for all of farmer?s group members. The early four units will be the beginning. If each of the group pay IDR 65,000 (around USD 7) per month, then the money can be used to fund another infiltration well
Objective 3 : Merbabu communities have the avenue for development and education of biogas to support the sustainable organic farming, collective economy, and environmental sustainability
Activities : 1. 2 unit biogas digesters are built in 2 villages (Wates and Derpowangsan) as demonstration illustration and education materials for community in surrounding
2. 2 unit of collective barns nearby the digester to herd the cows owned by community or farmer?s group members
3. At least 30 agents of farmer?s group have the knowledge regarding biogas digester technology
4. Group?s planning to collectively manage biogas digester are made available
Activities : 1. Biogas Digester Village Pilot
One biogas digester will be constructed in two villages (Wates and Derpowangsan) where it?s the location of farmer?s group. This installation will be the pilot and media education for the community in surrounding. The type of biogas digester to be built is Twin Dome Biogas Digester, which is efficient since it doesn?t need close maintenance and can stay for more than 15 years. The capacity for this type allow the production of industrial scale biogas from 6-12 cows, slurry, ready to use organic solid waste.
2. Collective Cow Barns
Collective cow barns are additional building for biogas digester in every village. The barns will collect the cattle from farmers and communities. Keeping the cows at one place will support the collective existing business of farmer?s group; strengthen the development of other collective business (such as save and loan, service provider, and agriculture) into cattle and small industries. The barns will be built along with the Biogas Digester or other farmer?s group with a lot of cows but doesn?t have collective barns.
3. Capacity Building for Biogas Digester
The event will be a one-day workshop for 50 participants regarding biogas digester. The participants will be farmer?s group agents and they will have knowledge and skills regarding biogas digester construction planning, biogas energy technology, slurry utilization and organic waste fertilizers, and biogas digester-based business plan. The activity will be implemented on July before the construction of biogas is started. The participants will consist of PPM staffs and 44 representatives from 22 farmer?s group of PPM members. It will be facilitated by PPM team.
4. Facilitation for Biogas Digester-based Collective Business
Through regular meeting in farmer?s group, PPM will monitor and facilitate the development of biogas digester-based collective business, such as organic farming, small industries (using the fire from biogas), collective cattle, organic fertilizers production, etc.
Objectives 4 : Monitoring and Evaluation
Indicators : 1. Review on implemented activities based on field monitoring
2. Identification of problems based on field monitoring so that it can be solved quickly
3. Monitoring report for four times during project implementation
4. Evaluation after monitoring, and one evaluation will be done altogether with the farmer?s group members
5. Initial and final financial and narrative meetings as stipulated in the contract
Activities : Monitoring to the field, Evaluation, Documentation, Reporting

EXPECTED OUTPUT
1. The community in Merbabu slot can conserve their land and home garden as well as utilizing wood and fruits later in the future to reduce dependency towards the forests? woods for fuel and construction materials. This activity will help to conserve the forest and endemic animals in Merbabu Mountain.
2. The activities can develop existing potentials in the groups to increase the revenue in the family
3. The infiltration well can reduce the dry level during the droughts
4. Merbabu community can open for alternative energy, such as biogas
5. Community?s welfare are increased along with the development of sustainable and environmentally savvy business
6. Increasing trust of the community and government towards community organization such as PPM to implement environmental related program; so that PPM can have to role in materializing the conservation of Merbabu National park
7. All of the activities in the secretariat and in the field are monitored to watch for any challenges, obstacles, and solvency if its needed
8. Report that all activities are well implemented, on time, and aiming at the right target so that it can be beneficial for all of the project?s stakeholders.
