Raising Conservation Awareness for Watershed Protection
Implementing NGO/CBO: Nam Choon Environment Protection Volunteer Group (NCEP): Established in 2003 as a volunteer group at regional level (region 7) with 16 members who were appointed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment. Later in 2004, NCEP launched activities to focus on activities at provincial level with officially appointed committee members.
Location of project:17 villages of Tambol Nam Choon and Tambol Namkor - a highland and mountainous watershed area about 72 ha of Khao Kaew Mountain, in the vicinity of Nam Nao National Park, where several creeks originates and supply water to bigger river basins of the Gulf of Thailand and Mekong River. During a few several public infrastructure development, the location has been under threats by deforestation to promote quick cash crop and para-rubber plantation which prompted intensive use of chemicals.
Target Population: 4,361 families in target location of which 300 families are project direct participants. The per capita income is THB:10,000.
Main Activities to be carried out:
1.Launching capacity building through workshop and training
2. Launching demonstration of activities: Rehabilitation of forest, wild-fire prevention and organic farming
3. Launching dissemination of project results
4. Launching participatory evaluation / knowledge management
Anticipated Results and Indicators:
1.Increased capacity and awareness of target population) witnessed by ability to participate in planning, & put into practice what being learnt
2. Established two groups of organic farming with 200 members
3. Reduction of chemical use by 50 % based on the current figures of 1,000 kg/year/family of chemical fertilizer and 20 litres/family/year of pesticide
4. Maintained watershed area , increase of at least 50 % of quantity of species in the targeted watershed area , with about 90 % wildfire reduction
