Protecting Biodiversity & Mitigating Climate Change Effect in Coastal Zone
Implementing NGO/CBO: Save Andaman Network Foundation (SANF): Registered as an environmental NGO in October 2010, with mandates to promote environment conservation and resources uses in coastal and marine ecosystems, enhance community capacity, and support mutual collaboration among sectors to realize sustainable development goal.
Location of project: Six villages in an Island ecosystems, Koh Libong, Trang Province of the Andaman Sea/Bay of Bengal. About half of the population earn their living through para-rubber plantation, while 40 % practice small scale fishery. The location is grid-connected and readily supplied with all kind of fossil-fuels.
Target Population: 1,941 families in target location of which 300 families are project direct participants. The per capita income is THB:189,610.
Main Activities to be carried out:
1.Launching capacity building through training , study tour & meetings, RE: renewable energy and ecosystems conservation
2. Launching demonstration of activities: Enhancing green and blue carbon stock, solar biomass and manual energy adoption
3. Launching dissemination of project results
4. Launching participatory evaluation /knowledge management
Anticipated Results and Indicators:
1.Increased capacity and awareness of target population (at least 150 persons) witnessed by ability to participate in planning, & put into practice what being learnt
2. Enhanced areas of carbon stock as follows:
- 100 ha of green carbon stock (trees in watershed
and cultivated area)
- 3,680 ha of blue carbon stock (mangrove & sea
grass)
3. Reduction/avoidance of CO2 emission as follows:
- 158 tons/year from gasoline use
- 6 tons/years from grid electricity
- 35 tons/year from fire-woods
- 0.4 tons/year from manual energy
4. Absorption of about 30 tons/year from blue carbon stocks
5. Emergence of a network of 40 coastal communities, as well as provincial mechanism overseeing marine & coastal ecosystems
6. Compilation of project results being publicized in a website
