Developing a sustainable model of agriculture in wetlands - Pilot project in Ndobogo wetland, Huye District
Developing a sustainable model of agriculture in wetlands - Pilot project in Ndobogo wetland, Huye District
The main objective of this project is to develop a pilot site demonstrating how wetlands can sustainably be cultivated and keep their water purification function.

The project will consist of re-designing the land use in Ndobogo wetland in such a way that soil, fertilizers and pesticides are not washed away and do not pollute upstream water bodies.
With the new design, cultivated areas will alternate with uncultivated ones (lying fallow) which will be serving as retention areas for sediments thanks to their natural vegetation. The project has a research component consisting in monitoring the marshland productivity, water and sediments quality and biodiversity in the pilot site. If the proposed model is efficient, results will be disseminated at the country level to sensitize stakeholders about the new wetlands management approach.

The project is joint project between a rice growers? cooperative (KOAIRWA) cultivating in Ndobogo wetland, the National University of Rwanda (NUR) and Huye District as per a MoU signed by the three organizations.
