Project aim:
Creation of highly productive forage grasslands on degraded lands and use of water saving technologies for solving socio-economic problem of oralmans on the example of Shygys settlement in East Kazakhstan Oblast
Project tasks:
- Training of rural production cooperative on rational use of lands, conducting demonstrational seminar and promotion of project?s achievements
- Demonstration of drip irrigation system as a water saving technology for prevention of degradation processes on homestead land of needy families
- Introduction of the remote livestock farming scheme on remote pasture in foothills of Ayirtau for keeping oralman?s cattle and demonstration of sustainable pastures management
- Speeded up productivity of unused degraded lands by growing Lucerne with the use of irrigating and enclosure of irrigated site with plantations of Zaisan saxaul
Project results:
- Increased income of local population
- Created additional job places for plants cultivation and organizing of rotational grazing
- Locals provided with fresh vegetables and fruits as well as with feed for own cattle
- Implemented drop irrigation system on households of 10 poor families of Shigis village that provided water consumption decreasing more than 10 times
- Created infrastructure for organization of seasonal rotational grazing and about 70% of locals? cattle send to remote pasture
- Created irrigated site on 200 ha on the right bank of of Kainak river with planting 150 ha of Lucerne that allowed increase productivity of degraded lands 5 times. On 25 ha grow vegetables and on 25 ha - young plants of fruit trees by the funds of interest holders

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
Gender equality is a part of project policy and all parties participate in project activities on equal base and benefit from project results.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Interests of locals ensured with their works results. Right scheme of pastures use allowed getting live weight gain about 30-40 kg per one cattle head, 7-9 kg per 1 small cattle head per season. Live weight gain allowed getting additional income for local population. Needy and large families, invalids also benefited from the project by getting aid from project participants.
