Decrease of land degradation through introduction of payment for ecosystem service (PES) mechanism in Turkestan district of South-Kazakhstan oblast
Project aim:
Assistance in restoring and conserving soil productivity in Turkestan district of South-Kazakhstan oblast through introduction of payment for ecosystem service (PES) mechanism taking into account necessity of adaptation to climate change
Project tasks:
- Conduct complex assessment of the territory with development of recommendations on improving land use in Turkestan district of South-Kazakhstan oblast
- Develop and introduce sustainable scheme of payments for ecosystem services on pilot territory
- Increase awareness of local communities, state and private bodies on payments for ecosystem services and best practices of land use taking into account necessity of adaptation to climate change
Project results:
- Created coordinating board from among the local governmental bodies, local communities and land users
- Developed and approved event plan on introducing new sustainable practices of land use
- Developed payment for ecosystem scheme for pilot territory
- Developed and approved plan of PES monitoring plan and its assessment scheme
- Signed PES contract on land management activities realization
- Developed recommendations for PES scheme improving according lessons learned
- Main interested parties informed on PES advantages, project?s land use best practices
- Min 100 participants trained on best practices use
- More than 150 items of printed and video materials issued and disseminated

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Farmers get compensations for nature-conserving activities. Local community benefited from better water and soil quality, increased soil productivity allows to get high-quality yields and locals get additional income from yields sales.
