Demonstration Project on Community-based Protection of Water Conservation Forest in Lancangjiang-Mekong River Basin
Demonstration Project on Community-based Protection of Water Conservation Forest in Lancangjiang-Mekong River Basin
Main Problems:
1.Recently, due to the degradation of forest and wetland, the ecosystem function of regulating water supply has been decreased, which has reduced the ecosystem resilience to extreme weather at Lancangjiang-Mekong River basin;
2. In the past decade, the forest transformation programme (to replace the natural forest with fast growing and high yield single-species forest ) in large scale, has degraded the ecological functions of forest ecosystem at Lancangjiang-Mekong River basin.
3. Research on the climate change impact to Lancangjiang-Mekong River basin predicts that the precipitation in winter and spring will reveal a trend of decrease, and the drought in these 2 seasons will be normal. So there is an urgent need to protect water conservation forest and wetland ecosystem at this region.

Solutions/activities:
1?Construct water supply facility for 30 households in Yunlong Tianchi National Nature Reserve, which will solve the problem of drinking water for 130 persons.
2. Protect 100 hectares of water conservation forest through outreach, trainings and establishment of water conservation forest monitoring group. Agreement for conservation will be signed between local community and Yunlong Tianchi National natural reserve administration. Comparative study on natural forest and man-made forest will be conducted.
3. Establish community nursery garden to restore about 100 Mu degraded water conservation forest. Local community and natural reserve administration will sign an agreement for conservation, and participate the M&E the conservation effectiveness.
4. Conduct scientific research to quantitively show the importance of natural water conservation forest to the safety of water supply in local community. It will provide a case-study for water resource mangement in Lancangjiang-Mekong river basin.
5.Promote project experiences through producing video documentary and participating in international communications, and exchange with NGOs of downstream countries.

Anticipated Results/outcomes:
1.30 households have stable drinking water supply.
2. About 100 hectares water conservation forest protected.
3. About 100 Mu water conservation forest replanted.
4. Case-study of water conservation forest protection shared with stakeholders through provincial level workshop in Yunnan.
5. The best practice of water conservation forest protection disseminated to other countries of Mekong River basin through video documentary and international communications.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
Community will sign agreement for conservation with local nature reserve administration to protect 100ha. of water conservation forest. Project will help community to establish nursery garden and community will reforest 7 ha. of water conservation forest. Community will take part in M&E.
Policy Impact
Project outcomes and experiences will be shared with Yunnan Province Forest Administration through stakeholders workshop. And the research on the importance of natural forest for water conservation will be submitted to local government.
