Demonstration Project on Reducing POPs in Chaohu Lake Watershed
Demonstration Project on Reducing POPs in Chaohu Lake Watershed
Main problems:
1. the average amount of pesticides used in Chaohu Lake area is 1.35kg per Mu (1Mu=667m2) . The structure of pesticides and fertilizers is unreasonable; large quantity of nitrogen and phosphorus and POPs flow into the lake, which causes blue-green algae booms in Chaohu Lake every year.
2?the public at Chaohu Lake watershed are lack of awareness on POPs and environmental protection. They are also lack of basic prevention measures and skills of self-protection from risk of POPs pesticides.
3?the potential risk of obsolete waste POPs historically and contaminated sites is outstanding.

Solutions/activities:
1. conduct investigation at 4 townships of the east part of Chaohu Lake and find out the present situation of POPs and establish 4 demonstration villages on the basis of the results of investigation report.
2. study laws and policys on POPs prevention and provide policy recommendation to government to strengthen POPs management.
3. promote information disclosure of POPs industry at Chaohu Lake Watershed
4. investigation on 4 POPs pesticides stock and industries at Chaohu Lake watershed and provide advice on POPs prevention and EHS management
5. provide training on health protection and POPs for 400 women and 2000 school students at 4 townships.
6.establish community-based organization to prevent and monitor POPs pollution at 4 demonstration villages and improve the monitoring system
7. establish waste POPs and pesticides collection system at 4 demonstration villages and set up 4 collection station and 80 collection containers
8. compile 'Green Alternative Methods for 9 organochlorine pesticides' manual and deliver to public; conduct technical training for farmers
9. establish 10 Mu pilot farmland to promote physical and biologic alternative technologies of pesticides
10. promote project achievements through PSA, stakeholders meeting, publication etc.

Anticipated results/outcomes:
1. farmers' awareness on POPs enhanced; support 4 community-based organizations to continuously deal with POPs issues locally
2. policy and government's attention on POPs is improved through POPs information disclosure, investigation on POPs industry and POPs pesticide stock;20kg obsoleted POPs pesticides are treated environmentally soundly.
3.1000 farmers of 4 demonstration villages are trained and know about the technical measures of alternative pesticides and bio-pesticides;100kg POPs pesticides are collected.
4. 400 women are trained on POPs and health protection;2000 students and children participated in environmental education.
5.POPs pesticides using are reduced by pilot alternative technology
6. public awareness on the harm of POPs enhanced
