Projecto de conservação de Gongon no Parque Natural do Fogo
Given the importance of the Pterodroma, also known as «Gongon», a marine bird, in the Parque Natural do Fogo, the Associação of Montinho, and Park management have engaged in a initiative to protect the species and to promote its conservation. The association recognizes the importance of conservation and possibilities to increase park visitors, specifically bird watching.
The project recognizes some threats, specifically: (1) the existence of cats in the area that predate nesting adults and juveniles, (2) predation on chicks, adults and eggs from the local population, and (3) the existence of rats in the area which creates a threat to eggs.
The project will aim to improve conditions for effective conservation Gongon in the park, and while collaborating with park management, and conducting awareness activities.
