Earth, water and fire: Greater Segera conservation and livlihoods project
Segera Jirani na Mazingira, is a registered CBO is based in Segera location within Laikipia County with objectives of fostering sustainable environmental practices and resolving community conflicts. In this proposal, the CBO seeks to promote Conservation land use incentives, demonstrate and promote adoption of appropriate rain water harvesting and storage technologies and demonstrate and promote adoption of alternative renewable heating and lighting technologies.
This will be done though number of activities that will include assembling and learning from relevant and experienced practitioners and agencies in technologies proposed. The lessons learnt will be documented and shared widely and it is projected the sharing will result in wider adoption and widespread use of the proposed interventions within the project area.
The project activities and results will contributed to GEF/SGP country strategy in climate change mitigation, prevention of land degradation and biodiversity conservation. In addition the project will contribute to efforts towards achieving Millennium Development Goals on women empowerment, sustainable environmental practices and reduction of poverty and hunger.

Capacity - Building Component
A first capacity building workshop was carried out in February 2010 with facilitation from Zeitz foundation where the members further refined their roles and responsibilities. Since the workshop, members became more involved in issues of local hire for major tourism concerns in the area becoming like the first ?clearing house? for those seeking employment in the ranches and lodges.
