Lingadzi Biodiversity and Ecosystem Conservation Project
Lingadzi Biodiversity and Ecosystem Conservation Project
Lingadzi river catchment, which forms a unique river basin and ecosystem, lies within the Lilongwe rural west. The river basin cuts across six streams flowing into Lingadzi river. The biodiversity and the diversity of ecosystems unique to this area faces great danger due to destructive human activity, climate change and some conflicting government policy. As a result there is a big woodland loss, natural deforestation, decrease in river water levels, habitat loss, extinct, threatened and endangered species. The purpose of the project is to strengthen rural community capacity to restore, manage and use biodiverity to reduce poverty through stable, sustainable and increased food production and income insecurity, imroved nutrition and indegenous medication and improved environmental management.
The project aims to promote the conservation of agro-biodiversity involving indegenous cultivars as well as medicinal plants by farmers and communities.Ialso aims to promote the conservation of aquatic and terrestrial biodiverity and ecosystem.
