Koh Mak Noi Community: Independent Energy Island Phase I
Implementing NGO/CBO:
Koh Mak Noi Village Committee (MNCOM): Established as a committee elected to be representatives for community members, under general oversight of Koh Panyi Tambol Administrative Organization. The mandate of the committee is to build capacity of community, promote learning process, encourage self-sufficiency economy, arrange systems for community security and drug prevention, as well as promote participatory process in addressing community problems.
Location of project:
Koh (island) Mak Noi village ,Tambol Koh Panyi, Maung District, Phangnga Province, and island along the southern coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. Situated furthest from the provincial town, about 42 km from mainland, boats is the only usual transport and rather difficult during the monsoon. With approximate area of 240 ha, the island is not connected to national grid. Lighting for family is by solar homes systems and small generator driven by internal compression engine (diesel engine).
Target Population:
All 283 families who earn living through small-scale fishing and pararubber plantation. The per capita income is THB: 60,000 (US$ 1,917).
Main Activities:
1.Launching capacity building of targeted population through meeting, training and seminars
2.Installing/testing/putting into use renewable energy systems (hybrid solar-diesel for water pumping)
3. Launching participatory evaluation
4. Launching dissemination of project results
Main Anticipated Result:
1. Increase technical capacity and awareness of targeted population witnessed by ability to operate and maintain solar home in a more efficient way and to formulate community master plan and community energy plan
2. Emergence of hybrid solar-diesel water pumping system for community water work, with approximate capacity of 91 cu.m /day
3. The hybrid solar-diesel system resulting in reduction of diesel oil by approximately 50 litres/day or 1,500 litres/month, equivalent to 4.8 ton/month of CO2 reduction
4. Increase recognition of public sector resulting in initiated relevant policy and financial support
