Community Waste Utilization for Toxic – Free Farming and Energy around Wangsaphung Municipality
Implementing NGO/CBO:
Social and Public Philanthropist Association (SOPPA): Registered in 2010 as a charity organization in Loei Province, SOPPA gathers together development personnel, conservationists, community leaders and general population to reverse mounting environmental degradation in the province. During the past two years, SOPPA had been working with / receiving financial supports from several donors, making it gain sufficient experience and resources to advance community development activities.

Location of project:
Three villages and three community schools in Loei Province?s Wangsaphung District, a municipality ? cultivated area in a plain of Loei River of the Greater Mekong Sub-basin. The municipality waste was about 300 tons/year where about 50 % contain chemicals of global concerns such as POPs and other toxic chemicals.

Targeted Population:
About 458 families in Wangsaphung Municipality with diverse occupation: 80 % paddy farming, small business 15 % and civil service 5%. 30 familes are directed benefit of the project. The per capita income is THB: 35,000 (US$ 1,118).

Main Activities:
1.Launching capacity building of targeted population through meeting, training and seminars
2. Building / operating waste management systems
3.Launching dissemination of project results
4. Launching participatory evaluation

Main Anticipated Result:
1. Increase capacity of 40 community leaders witnessed by ability to actively participate and managing the project.
2. Established at least 7 facilities to process organic waste into usable biogas thus reducing the use of canned LPG by about 1,080 kg.
3. Increase technical capacity of 25 community members, especially on biogas energy
4. Anticipated reduction of municipality waste including POPs and harmful chemicals to 240 tons/year
5. Approximately 8 acres being turned into organic plot growing edible native species-demonstrating a saving cost of organic farming by THB: 25,000/year.
