I. Progress report (December 26, 2012):
Activities undertaken:
1.Launching capacity building of targeted population through meeting, training and seminars RE: Biomass and medicinal species inventory within community forest, and community energy planning
2. Building /installing renewable energy systems and putting into use: high efficiency stoves, biogas, wind Turbine and carbon sink
3. Launching dissemination of project results
4. Launching participatory evaluation

Results of activities:
1. Increased capacity and awareness of targeted population witnessed by
- participation in compilation of data on consumption of fire-woods to be used for community energy planning
- emergence of community energy plan further submitted to the Thai Health Fund Office for a longer term management of energy
- ability to put into practice after workshop/training process (biogas construction and maintenance of 1,000 and 200-litre capacity, big and small biomass stove fabrication and wind energy installation)
- ability to compile technical experience as a knowledge piece for community learning
- some community members going out to learn more from resources persons
2. Primarily estimated avoidance of CO2 emission as follows:
- 45.78 kg /month/family from biogas replacing canned gas
- 146 kg /month/family from biomass stove replacing canned gas
3. Established mobile exhibition to disseminate media and compiled experience of the project
4. Acquired summarized lesson learn on project implantation to be used as reference in further implementation

Project Visibility and Communication by other organizations/individuals:
On 27/9/2012, GEF SGP National Coordinators from Afghanistan, Bhutan, Timor-leste and Thailand visited the project to witnessed results of the back project ( August 08-August 10 duration) and this on-going project .

Experience ,lessons learnt, problems and issues:
The project reported the following as problems and issues:
1. Procurement of special equipment for renewable energy activities was not holistically planned thus caused some delay in the activities
2. Dates of activities/events of stakeholders falling on the same dates of the project caused limit participation from targeted population.

In addressing them, the following measures were launched/recommended:
1. The project should have done survey on availability of equipment and procured well in advance, as some equipment was not always available locally
2.The project should have cross-checked more thoroughly dates of other activities/events happening in project location. This would help facilitate planning and implementation.

Project experience and lessons learnt were outlined as follows:
1. Participation from both public and private sectors in project location was imperative. Participation may be through in-cash/in-kind contribution.
2. Coordination and advice from back projects of SGP was highly recommended.
3. Demonstration / training activities may be most efficient with appropriate numbers of participants ? not too many.

Project expense:
The project reported the expense of THB: 409,000 out of the first disbursement of THB:410,089.34.

II. Project Site Visit (January 16, 2013):
Findings and Observation:
The visiting team visited Baan (village) Mai Thaicharoen, Tambol Borpho, one of the three targeted villages, where biomass and biogas energy were being promoted and demonstrated. In a premises of one household whose main livelihood activity was farming, mostly paddy and corn, a biogas facility of about one cu.m making use hog manure was seen in operation supplying gas to kitchen of the family. In addition, one biomass stove which burned rice husk was seen completed in fabrication and burning successfully. Seven project members who interacted with the visiting team expressed their satisfaction with this accomplishment.

To further witness project accomplishment, another targeted village ,Baan Borpho, was visited. Majority of community also practicing agriculture and producing non-iodize salt for a living. Here in the village, another biogas facility of the same design was seen in operation supplying gas to two families. Also, a biomass stove of bigger capacity was seen completed in construction. The stove would be used as a central unit for salt production of project members and community.

The final point of visit was also in a field on Baan Borpho, where one wind tower of about 350-w capacity, intended for battery charging was seen completed in construction and supplying electricity to a battery and one electric lamps.

As the location was an agricultural area, biomass from agricultural waste, i.e. rice husk and corn cob appeared plentiful ensuring material for 60 biomass stoves of family size which the project aimed to fabricate. If used substantially, these stoves would contribute to avoidance of increase of CO2 emission from grid energy, canned gas, and in sustainable use of fire-woods as intended.

Technical capacity of project leaders was notable. Capacity-building through study tour and training added more to their pre-existing capacity.

The activity to enhance cabon stock had not been started, as the past following 6 months fell out of planting season. But the project planned to carry out this activity in the coming rainy season.

Results and indicators:
1. Increase technical capacity of 20 core members witnessed by ability to transfer biogas/biomass/wind technology to the targeted 500 members
2. Emergence of renewable energy units for daily use as follows:
- Two units of wind energy producing electricity for charging batteries of project members
- One unit of wind energy for water pumping
- Two units of biogas facilities ( capacity of 1,000 and 200 litres)
- 30 sets of biomass stove reducing the use of fire-woods
3. A degraded area of about 32 ha being re-vegetated with 10,000 native tree species of multipurpose with one compiled list of native tree
4. Estimated reduction/avoidance of CO2 emission as follows:
- 45.78 kg/month/family from biomass stove
- 45.78 kg/month/family from biomass stove
5. Compiled knowledge on species of ecosystems provision for sustainable use
6. Emergence of sustainable community energy plan for implementation.

Project Communication:
On 24 Dec 2013,the Community-based Network of Energy for Health visited the project aiming to share experience on implementing renewable energy of the project: fabrication of biomass stove, construction of biogas facilities and wind energy.

Experience , Lessons Learnt , Problems and Issues:
1. Some capacity-building activities had to be very carefully carried out, since some period of project duration fell on a local political campaign. In order to avoid any bias and conflict, project leaders postponed out some activities, as appropriate.
2. It really took times to change behavior of targeted population regarding daily energy use options, as the population, by-and-large ,were accustomed to fossil energy availability and its more convenience to choose. For any other project, this would be addressed by focusing first on a group that showed genuine interest in adopting renewable energy , making model for communities first.
3. In launching any type of renewable energy, project leaders should give priority to community context before the complexity of renewable technology.

Plans and Activities for Sustainability:
With knowledge and experience gained, project leaders planned to replicate the activities in surrounding communities with requested fund from local administrative organizations and the Community-based Network of Energy for Health.
