I. Progress report (January 5, 2013):
Activities undertaken:
1.Launching capacity building of targeted population through meeting, training and seminars: confirming courses of project with members
2. . Building/ installing renewable energy systems and putting into use: high efficiency stoves, biogas, solar/wind pump and carbon sink:
- building one high-efficiency charcoal producing kiln of 3 cu-M capacity and 10 of 200-litre capacity
- Installing one solar water pumping unit
- Installing one wind energy
- Distributing 20 species of native trees to project members for planting in project location as a carbon sink

Results of activities:
1. Increased understanding and confidence on projects of 56 members and concerned authority witnessed by sharing idea and active participation in activities, and putting in to real practice with 28 members as resources persons
2. Both types of charcoal procuring kilns being tried and showing primarily promising results
3. Four solar panels being able to successfully drive a water pumping system water for agricultural practice and generate electricity for community learning centre ? reduction of grid electricity bill by THB: 3,500/year
4. The 2,500-W wind energy being able to generate electricity to community learning centre- avoiding grid electricity bill by THB: 4,000 / year
5. Compiled local curriculum on solar water pumping and wind energy
6. Preparation of plots for tree planting for 100 project members

Project Visibility and Communication by other organizations/individuals:
25-28 October 2012: A group of vocational students from Northeastern University Khonkaen Province visited the project as an activity under summer camp. The visiting students specially paid attention to awareness of CBOs on climate change adaption and renewable energy. The students insisted to spread the message both on-line and exhibition.

Emerging problems/issues and approaches for solution:
1. Current draught and unseasonal rain directly affected activities on growing native trees as carbon sink. Some members were not able to maintain grown tress as planned. Solution: Encouraging sharing ideas among members on appropriate water management
2. As accessory electronic equipment of solar and wind energy was new to project members making technical capacity building rather problematic.Solution: Coordinating with the Northeastern University?s Faculty of Engineering , Khonkaen Province, for technical assistance to elaborate on the electronic issues resulting in more understanding of members and ability to use the equipment

Summarized lesson learnt:
The project gave as a reminder to inexperience organizations and capital cost that before deciding to use any type of alternative energy , it was imperative to launch a thorough study, reflect and plan. As a rule, all technology had both positive and negative side, and limitation requiring complicate management and lots of unexpected cost .

Project Expense:
The project reported the expense of THB: 470,000 out of the first disbursement of THB:493,890.38.

II. Project Site Visit (January 17, 2013):
Findings and Observation:
Amid cultivated area of sugar cane and paddy in a valley near Baan (village) Wangyang, Tambol Srithan, one of the targeted villages, situated a premises of the project with one installed small wind tower and one solar water pumping system. So far, the solar pumping system was witnessed to function successfully delivery underground water to store in a 1.5 cu.M elevated tank within less than one hour, supplying water to irrigate about 1.5 acre of plot grown with 800 native species - all of them native fruit trees. The small wind tower furled from time-to-time but sufficiently producing electricity to store in a set of batteries for further use, avoiding electricity from grid. Activities on installation of wind and solar energy may be assessed as complete with satisfactory outcomes.

Back into the village, a plot of one of the 470 project participating members was visited. Scores of seedlings of native species, mostly of edible kind, were witnessed ready to be planted turning this 6-acre of land greener and serving as a carbon stock.

However, the activity on biomass energy on building the 3 - cu.M charcoal producing kiln in Baan Srisongrak, Tambol Phanokkhao , encountered a slight technical problem. This problem involved a wrong insulating materials (rice straw) being used to mix with the earthen insulator. Nevertheless, project leaders confirmed their capacity to make it right.

After interacting with six project leaders, the visiting team agreed that technical capacity on solar and wind energy of these leaders were notable. The team was sufficiently and satisfactorily briefed and answered. In addition, the grantee had received the ?Beautiful Forest, Clean Water? an award of the Siam Commercial Bank, Ltd, a grant from the government?s Health Promotion Fund and the Japanese Embassy in Thailand.

In spite of the seemingly successful solar and wind energy use demonstration at the community learning centre, it was rather difficult to perceive clearly that these types of renewable energy would be mainstreamed or adopted widely within a year or two, especially on an individual basis where only about $1,000 would be needed for one household to carry out livelihood activities using solar energy.

Results and indicators:
1. Increase technical capacity of 31 network members on renewable energy witnessed by ability to transfer knowledge to others and install and put into use an on climate change witnessed by ability to initiate collective mitigating plans at local level and to realize participating roles
2. One charcoal burning kiln, 10 high-efficiency charcoal burning kilns, 6 biogas facilities, one solar pump, and one small wind generator completed in construction/installation and put into use among at least 100 families.
3. Emergence of 3 learning centres to disseminate management of alternative energy and integrated farming
4. Emergence of a group pursuing the idea of small business on alternative energy.
5. Avoidance/reduction of CO2 as follows:
? 483.84 kg/year from using solar pump
? 17,837.82 kg/year from using biogas pits
? 1,323 kg/year from using wind turbine
6. Approximately 93.38 tons/year of CO2 being fixed into the growing 4,600 trees


Project Communication:
In addition to the previous communication, there had been the followings:
1. On 17 Jan 2013, the NC and project leaders of THA/SGP/OP5/Y2/STAR/CC/12/01 visited the projects. The visit was a part of M & E as well as a capacity building process.
2. On 16 Jan 2014, a team of the independent evaluation visited the project to conduct an evaluation initiated by UNDP EO.

The project referred to the same as stated in the progress report.

Plans and Activities for Sustainability:
During the participatory evaluation upon project completion, it was agreed that the experience and lessons learnt of the project would be integrated into local policy to materialize the adoption of renewable energy.
