Ecotourism in Central Kazakhstan: conservation of SPA natural recourses and creation of economic opportunities in the rural areas, 2nd stage
Project aim:
Conservation of KizilArai SPA?s biodiversity and sustainable use of its natural recourses as well as capacity development and strengthening local community of Shabanbai bi village, located in SPA?s buffer zone by eco-tourism development and alternative technologies implementing
Project tasks:
- Decreasing the load on the SPA by creating on its territory infrastructure promoting sparing biodiversity components usage
- Increasing potential and capacity building of locals on realizing of alternative ?income getting? ways and decreasing their dependence from direct usage of natural resources
- Decreasing threatens for SPA?s biodiversity by forming mechanisms of environment components sustainable use by locals
- Creation of schemes on regulation of tourists flow and interaction of tourists and locals with SPA management
Project results:
- Staying of elemental tourists in KizilArai SPA is regulated with developed tourist paths and sites (3 paths and 3 sites)
- Increased public awareness on rules of staying in the SPA: placed 2 informational stands (in SPA and in Aktogai settlement), developed environmental standards of behavior for tourists in SPA, created rules sheet, created a scheme map for tourists of KizilArai areas with made paths and paths for cyclists for impact minimization on flora and fauna (disseminated about 500 maps)
- Info center in Shabanbai bi settlement, created under the project, serve not less than 100 visitors per season
- About 150 members of Shabanbai bi village rural community got access to alternative sources of income by organizing services in ecotourism field, work about 12 active guest houses and 3 guides
- Created Public Council on ecotourism with clear responsibilities and authorities of its members, accepted by another village inhabitants
- Organized work of rural fund of interest-free loans (approved schemes of paying out, rules of getting loan, fund formalized). During the project several families got loans for equipping guest houses and implementation of alternative technologies
- Under the project equipped not less than 4 demonstrational guest houses (equipping with services and utilities)
Established good relations and feedback among locals ? meetings, communication during the seminars, placed suggestion box)
- Together with locals analyzed reasons of poaching by local community, detected main threats for SPA?s biodiversity. Poaching level decreased on 50%
- Improved communications and relationship between SPA?s management and local community, held two seminars with participation of both on sustainable nature resources management and environment-friendly behavior on the territory of SPA
- In two guest houses installed demonstrational alternative resource-saving equipment, held trainings on energy efficiency (solar water heaters, effective stoves and heat insulation) and on practices of efficient resources use (dry toilets, collection of rain water, compost). As a result not less than in 4 houses implemented alternative technologies
- Developed 5 eco-tours that don?t affect biodiversity of SPA and are realizing of region?s travel agencies
- On 20% decreased the share of un-organized tourism on SPA?s territory, the work of SPA is being supported from funds getting from ecotourism development
- Actively works info center for tourists in EcoMusem of Karaganda city for increasing public awareness on principles of environmental-friendly eco-tourism and behavior rules in SPA
- Created guide-books for future guides from the local community and SPA employees (250 items on Kazakh language and 250 on Russian language), published and disseminating among the tourists written rules of behavior in SPA (2000 copies on Kazakh and 2000 copies on Russian languages)
- Info tour in Kizil Arai for Kazakhstan mass media allowed to attract public attention to the problems of tourism in SPA and popularize new sustainable forms of tourism among the locals and tourists (not less than 10 publications in mass media)

Improved communications and relationship between SPA?s management and local community.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Locals benefited in many fields of their life ? environment improvement, houses modernization, additional source of income and possibility to take interest-free loan, but the most important ? new knowledge and skills in ecotourism that allowed developing ecotourism and business while nature conservation. Solar water heaters, dry toilets, energy-efficiency stoves and houses heat insulation, installed in the locals? houses, are part of main local?s benefits.
