GRANT WRITING CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP FOR LOCAL CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS AND COMMUNITY BASED ORGANISATIONS

The project will deliver grant writing skills in the form of a Capacity Development Workshop for local CSOs and CBOs inclusive of grantees who have organizations that are deficient in these areas. The workshop will address all areas of the grant writing process, starting with project concept development through to finalization of the final proposal. Areas to be covered will include budgeting and co-financing for projects and project implementation, monitoring and evaluation.

Project Characteristics and Results

Planning gef grant

The demand for the workshop was so high here in the capital the college and the GEF SGP recognize the need to scale up the project during OP5 to reach a greater number of local NGOs who would benefit from the training and the GEF SGP as a participant in promoting sustainable development.

Policy Impact

The government will continue to support goals of the GEF SGP through the further development of new and existing policies to protect and sustainably managed the environment, noted by the Minister of the Environment who provided the keynote address to the workshop.

Project sustainability

The knowledge acquired by the participants were taken back to their local NGOs and shared with others. As a result, the knowledge is being used to train new persons otherwise not reached without this type of programme like the GEF SGP.

Replication of project activities

The project was so successful in the capital, until requests have reached us through grant proposals to bring the same type of training to the rural family island communities. As a result, the project will be replicated in the rural communities on the island of Andros, Grand Bahama, Abaco and Exuma in Spring 2013.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The workshop provided media focus on the GEF SGP and its support both locally and internationally to the local public. Press releases were produced and circulated in national print media and internationally through web based sources.

Capacity - Building Component

The workshop provided skills transfer to 26 local CSOs equiping them with a set of comprehensive tools used for completing grant proposals and project concept applications.

Gender Focus

The workshop was attended by nearly 75% females working in the local CSO communities.

Project Results

The project provided direct training to 35 persons from 26 local civil society organizations. All participants learnt how to complete the project concept and proposal applications of the GEF SGP, in addition, the participants were taught general skills on grant writing and preparing grant applications to donors. The partnership provided under the grant involved governments, private sector, academia and international organizations working together to provide effective delivery of grant writing materials to participants. Many of the participating organizations were placed in a better position to access funding through grant application as a result of the workshop.
