Mangrove Preservation and Development-Based Coastal Cuisine
GOAL
Sustainable Mangrove Management and Welfare of Traditional Fishermen Households are realized.
OBJECTIVES
Objective 1 : Increased group income by processing a group of coastal-based culinary in a sustainable manner
Indicators : 1. Existing culinary business managed by Group
2. Existing three products that can be marketed and profitable
3. Existing three types of processed products which are, crackers made from mangrove, shrimp-paste and shredded fish
Activities : 1. Coastal-based Crackers Production
Coastal-based crackers production with mangrove as ingredient is initiated by training and development of business analysis. The next thing is the production with the proposed budget. In the early stages, the production is marketed at local level, aiming to trigger public response in form of flavor and quality feedback. Then the response becomes input for the next production. Then, the issue of production permits.
2. Production of shredded fish
Production of shredded fish will begin by training and then program beneficiaries will practice and run test on taste and quality. After that, permits of home industry production (PIRT) will be proposed to the Department of Health and the Department of Trade
3. Production of Shrimp Paste
Production of Shrimp Paste becomes the choice because in Kampung Nelayan, some of the housewives are used to make shrimp-paste, although they made it for limited consumption and not to be marketed. With this potential, production of shrimp paste would be possible.
4. Administration work to have permits of home industry production (PIRT)
5. Market Survey
Survey will be conducted after the entrepreneurship training is conducted. It is a good thing to do, thus in the beginning, the beneficiaries already know how to perceive the market and market potential. Survey will be conducted in Medan city especially the traditional shops and supermarkets. Besides to compare price, survey becomes a measure in the packaging models of the same product
Objective 2 : Strengthening of group capacity in the utilization of coastal resources
Indicators : 1. Strengthening of group capacity in the processing business of coastal based culinary products
2. Group business is managed properly
3. The group could develop product
4. Established partnerships with stakeholders in business development
Activities : 1. Training on Products Processing
Training on product processing will be conducted to the housewives in coastal area and the drop out of school-girls. There are three types of product processing training which are training of mangrove crackers production, shredded fish and shrimp paste production. The choice of shredded fish and shrimp paste production is based on the potential of the raw materials that are available in Nelayan village. This training will invite facilitator from Muara Tanjung Group who has been successfully managing mangrove products. This training will be conducted for two days at the community hall which was established by P3MN and Tunas Muda
2. Training on Business Management
Training on Business Management is aimed to strengthen their capacity to manage the prospective business. The group will be trained to manage cash flow, calculate balance and a standard financial record keeping system, quality management and SOP of business management
3. Training on Marketing
Training on Marketing will focus on these following topics: how to see market opportunities, market segments, and product development for market variations and marketing management
4. Case study
Case study will be carried out in Muara Tanjung group in Sei Nagalawan village in order to obtain feedback as well as to be an inspiration to group members of the beneficiaries, in this case the youth and housewives. During case study, participants directly see product processing activities. Moreover, they also can discuss about tourism businesses, and joint venture fisheries with Muara Baimbai group
5. UMKM Worskhop
The workshop is aimed to establish partnerships with related stakeholders. Form of partnership is expected not only in the sense of moral support but also the concrete ones such as capital injection and business development. This workshop will invite SMEs of City and Province, Trade & Industry Agency, Fisheries and Maritime Agency, Banking, and others. This workshop will encourage related parties to be willing to establish partnerships for business sustainability
Objective 3 : Strengthening community participation in mangrove conservation
Indicators : 1. Beneficiaries are actively contributing energy, thoughts and time in mangrove conservation
2. People know and understand the purpose and benefits of mangrove planting
3. Existing mangrove nursery
4. Existing 20,000 mangrove seedlings in several sites (total area of 2 ha)
Activities : 1. Mangrove nurseries
Nursery is carried out directly by the beneficiary. Beside to experience firsthand the process of good breeding, it is also to encourage self-reliance in mangrove conservation thus they don?t have to buy seeds during planting. The seedlings that are going to be planted will be from the mangroves in Nelayan village area that consist of various mangrove species. Seeding will be carried out in fruit season, thus the availability of seeds is more ensured.
2. Mangrove Planting
Mangrove planting is carried out in critical mangrove area. The location is an area of 2 ha scattered in several places. Planting will be carried out in tributaries and in several stages responding to the situation and condition of seedling availability and seedling growth.
3. Education curriculum development on mangrove ecosystems
Education curriculum development on mangrove ecosystems is aimed so that drop out children who are currently become participant of alternative education initiated by P3MN have curriculum that can be applied. In addition to that, curriculum development is also a long-term effort, so that Nelayan village can be used as one of education sites of mangrove area for general public.
4. Mangrove maintenance
The high waves, the possibility of pests and seeds that do not grow well make intensive maintenance is required. This maintenance is carried out by group members. However, because generally they are out fishing in the sea, then expense to pay for maintenace officer is required to have intensive maintenace.
Objective 4 : Transformation of knowledge and experience of GEF-SGP partners through the writing of lesson learned and partners gathering
Indicators : 1. Partners and community experiences in the utilization of natural resources in North Sumatra are documented and publicated
2. Existing experiences and knowledge sharing among partners of GEF SGP Indonesia
3. Existing shared knowledge and organizational experiences among community
Activities : 1. Desk Study
This activity will record the experiences, interesting stories of each partners, the CBOs of P3MN partners in this context. Desk Study will be conducted through formal and informal discussions. Besides, information about community perspective on the activities and impact of Citizen Based Organization/CBO will be explored through interview
2. Workshop
Lesson Learned in managing utilization project of coastal and marine resources. This workshop will be conducted in simultaneous with inter-CBOs activities that aim to obtain in-depth information of lesson learned in each group. This workshop will also be a joint forum to make a joint planning
3. Writing of Lesson Learned
Writing will be carried out from the proses of data and information exploration from desk study, workshops results, informal discussions and interviews.
4. Discussion of the Writing
This discussion will invite resource persons who are experienced in the process of preparing book and also to get feedback to refine the book.
