Conservation and Utilization of Batang Gadis National in Buffer Zone Park from Mining Activities threat through comunity-based Organic Farming
Goal : Independent community to do conservation and utilization of economic value in the buffer zone of Batang Gadis National Park

Objective 1 : Encouraging community initiative and independence to conserve and enhance the utilization of economic value in the buffer zone of Batang Gadis National Park through community-based organic farming
Indicators : 1. Strengthening knowledge and skills of communities in conservation and utilization of the economic value in the buffer zone of Batang Gadis National Park
2. The establishment of customary agreement in maintaining the sustainability of carrying capacity in the buffer zone of Batang Gadis National Park
3. Naposo Nauli Bulung Organization (PNNB) becomes the pioneer of creative efforts to secure the buffer zone of Batang Gadis National Park
Activities : 1. Awareness building of the Youth Group on the importance of securing conservation area of Batang Gadis National Park (NP)
- Community. This activity is a part of the effort in building a sustainable community empowering. One of the follow-up plans of the organization's capacity building programs is training of organic farming (from Brenjonk) as PNNB program. This training will be attended by PNNB members consisting of the youths in Lumban Dolok Village. PNNB has been preparing the land and place as media for brenjonk demonstration plot. Training is facilitated by organic farmers facilitators which will be carried out in the third month of the program. Training is attended by 15 elected persons who will later become dynamic driving force of brenjonk and study group of local food in Lumban Dolok village.
2. Learning Circle for Local Food
This activity is in form of study group formation across community to exchange experiences and knowledge about land conservation, preservation of springs, organic farming and biodiversity of local food. PNPB along with 15 participants of brenjonk training will become the initiator and facilitate this learning circle. At least seven study groups will be formed in the village of Lumban Dolok. At least in the fourth month they will be formed. Target of participants are residents of Dolok Lumban village in general.

Objective 2 : Securing upperstream area to secure community?s springs
Indicators : i. Data collection and securing upstream area of the river as one of the main agenda of Dolok Lumban village
ii. Community is able to meet the needs of seedlings for reforestation independently
iii. Village working group has a clear agenda and community support
Activities : 1. Documenting springs and plants that have conservation and economic value in the upstream area
Before implementing reforestation, it is crucial to collect data on springs and local plants that have important conservation and economical value. Data collection will be the basis to set goals of reforestation and types of plants
2. Mapping of energy production and consumption in community-scale and pilot development of alternative energy
Biomass is one of community energy sources in addition to liquid pressured gas and Kerosene. Due to the limited supply of gas and kerosene these days, community tends to consume more wood biomass to fulfill energy needs. PNNB will hold a community-scale mapping of production and consumption as well as carry out a pilot development of fulfilling alternative energy needs in households scale
3. Youth Movement Securing the Upstream
PPNB will initiate reforestation and maintenance of the upstream area by driving groups of young people from various kampongs, also by involving the neighboring villages
4. Organic farming demonstration plots ala Brenjonk System
Seeding of local plants species that have conservation and economic value to meet the needs of seedlings is conducted independently to increase economic of the family in the community. Seeding will be conducted in cooperation with the local Department of Agriculture and Plantation as well. This demonstration plot is a learning media developed after the implementation training of organic farming in the third month. This will always be the learning media and a model for Lumban Dolok community.

Objective 3 : Documentation of best practices on Conservation and Utilization in the buffer zone of Batang Gadis National Park
Indicator : Best practices of conservation and utilization in buffer zone of Batang Gadis National Park Buffer are documented in a participatory manner
Activities : 1. Filming a documentary about the "Youth Rescue Upstream Area of Batang Gadis NP?
This film will explain the importance of upstream areas of Batang Gadis National Park for the people's lives, and how the community became an pioneer in securing the important area..
2. Diary of Community Best Practice in Securing Upstream Area of Batang Gadis NP
PPNB and the actors of change at Lumban Dolok village will record thoughts and experiences related to their area. These stories contain learning on ways to conserve and utilize the buffer zone of Batang Gadis National Park, which could be replicated elsewhere
3. Monitoring & Evaluation
Monitoring is carried out to monitor the progress of organic farming implementation (brenjonk) and the progress of learning circle and youth movement to rescue the river. Monitoring is carried out in the 3rd month, 6th, 9th and 12th during the ongoing program. Evaluations performed during the second monitoring (month 6) and the fourth monitoring (month 12) in order to examine the progress of the program for 6 months running and end programs, to make room for improvements next year
EXPECTED OUTPUT
1. Community-based Organization (PNNB) as a pioneer and driver for various initiatives to conserve and to utilize buffer zone of Batang Gadis NP in Lumban Dolok village
2. The unity of historical ecology area of the Upstream Zone which are Aek Latong and Aek Siancing as the area of springs for agricultural and daily needs, which is also the buffer zone of Batang Gadis NP is maintained
3. Organic farming activities add value for the households of community who engage in the activities
4. Learning center becomes the center to exchange community?s knowledge and experience in conserving and utilizing buffer zone of Batang Gadis NP

Direct : Community of Lumban Dolok Village, Mandailing Natal District. Direct beneficiaries have reached to 3.993 people. Fifty one percent of direct beneficiary is female group and 49% is male
