GOAL
Conservation of biodiversity, through the development of Conservation Tourism Village as efforts to reduce local community dependence to natural resources utilization in the region of Mount Ungaran, Central Java
OBJECTIVES
Objective 1 : Increasing public awareness on the importance of biodiversity in the region of Mount Ungaran
Indicators :
1. Reducing exploitation of biodiversity both the animals and plants in this region
2. Existing village regulations on sustainable use of biodiversity
3. Active community participation of all ages and gender in the activities of biodiversity rescue
4. Existing nursery and forest rehabilitation carried out by community
Activities :
1. Dissemination, elucidation and environmental education to the community
To reduce the exploitation rate of biodiversity in the region of Mt. Ungaran by the people, awareness raising of biodiversity importance to human life is needed, especially for the people living adjacent to the center of biodiversity. Awareness efforts are carried out through several steps which consist of dissemination, elucidation and environmental education.
Despite having a high dependence of forest, people tend to lacking understanding of biodiversity potential within the forest. Thus, dissemination is required and so people will be careful in utilizing forest and not damaging biodiversity potential. Elucidation is aimed to strengthen communities? capacity through a participatory, communal learning process for behavioral changes in utilizing forests, from exploitation to a sustainable utilization. Implementation of activities is carried out at community meeting hall attended by community from Banyuwindu Limbangan village as target participants. Several things that need to be disseminated are biodiversity potential based on several previous studies as well as other potentials. This meeting needs to be held since most people do not even know of the potential or only know a limited, and just considered as local knowledge.
2. Facilitation of village regulations development on the utilization of biodiversity in a sustainable manner
The existence of vilage regulations (Perdes) that binds and mutually agreed by the community is needed to suppress the excessive utilization of biodiversity. However sometimes, people do not understand how to design and set up these regulations. Therefore, people need facilitation in the development of village regulations on the utilization of biodiversity in a sustainable manner. Regulations must have a strong legal force to protect biodiversity and not conflicted with state law, thus involvement of legal institutions such as Legal Aid is needed in this case. Perdes development will be drafted together with the community and also some of the stakeholders in the region such as Perhutani, village government, and certainly the Legal Aid.
3. Establishing nursery demonstration plot for local plants
Communities? dependence on forest will lead to over-exploitation. There is the opening of new land for coffee plantations currently. This phenomenon makes several local plants become rare and diminishing. If this continues over time, these plants will certainly be depleting. The decrease of trees number will also resulted in reduced species living in it. Breeding efforts should be immediately carried out by community to anticipate the extinction of local and rare plants. Therefore we need a good breeding site to support breeding process. The results will be the seeds of native and rare plants and also fruits trees that can help communities? economy. These breeding plots will be set up on village land that is not in use, so the use of this land will not cause problems in the future. They will also set up the plots not far from the river to facilitate irrigation. The construction will be carried out in communal.
4. Rehabilitation of forest around the village with local plants
This activity is a follow-up of a real community action to plant the surrounding forest that has suffered from logging with the seeds coming from the previous breeding activities. The seeds are taken from the forests to be bred in demonstration plots. Thus all of the new plants are actually local plants and will not drastically change the area. The event will be held together by community and several partners such as Perhutani, indigenous institutions, etc.
Objective 2 : Community Institutional Development and Strengthening of Conservation Tourism Village
Indicators :
1. Establishment of a solid Community Institution of Conservation Tourism Village
2. Existing map of of duties and responsibilities, distribution of area management by the community
3. Existing regular meetings of the group in preparing action plans, monitoring and evaluation of area management
4. Evaluation and monitoring activity on a regular basis by community
Activities : 1. Training on basics organization and community organizations? management
Training on basics organization and community organizations? management emphasizes on providing training covering the basics of organization and management in organization. These activities are indispensable for capacity improving and management strengthening of conservation tourism village such as authority and responsibility of each member. Moreover, it is to minimize the ?infection? of organization?s ?diseases?. These diseases are referred to unequal division of labor/power, the imbalance between the powers and responsibilities, communication lacking between members, no sense of belonging thus work performance is not optimal. Training will be in form of focused group discussion (FGD), attended by management members of the conservation tourism village center at a community meeting hall.
2. Community facilitation in preparing action plans, monitoring and evaluation of area management
This community facilitation is an effort to increase communities? role in the management of conservation rural tourism includes action plan, monitoring and evaluation design. The activity is more focused on the exchange of information through sharing, discussion and question and answer. This facilitation is based on community limitations in obtaining information and knowledge about the implemented programs. Implementation of routine activities is carried out every single week at a community meeting hall with management members of the conservation tourism village.
Objective 3 : Increasing local economy through eco-tourism
Indicator : Increasing economic activity and types of communities economy through home-stay services, guiding services, eco-tourism packages and specific souvenirs trading
Activities :
1. Training of Basic Tourism including guiding techniques and eco-homestay
It is one of the training provided to the community including to the managers of conservation tourism village. It is given to provide knowledge about the basics of tourism, including the seven enhancement (sapta pesona), guiding technigques in receiving visits and also to create and provide eco-homestay. Training will be done with the help of instructors from the department of tourism, ecotourism practitioners, while the participants of this activity are Banyuwindu community and management members of conservation tourism village. This training will be packaged in form of 3 days training in Banyuwindu village.
2. Development of ecotourism packages
As one follow-up in the realization of this conservation village tourism, tour packages that can be offered to prospective visitors are required. These packages are developed based on environmentally friendly tour and specific to the potential of Banyuwindu region. This activity is carried out by community together with Green Community in Banyuwindu. After conducting an inventory of the existing potential in the village, then development of these programs into eco-tourism packages is carried out.
3. Training on improving selling price of local crafts and promotional efforts
It is a program in order to improve entrepreneurship culture as one of the alternative income of local communities in accordance with its potential. Some potential to be developed are handicrafts, palm sugar, and coffee. The training provided will include the preparation, production and marketing, promotion and way to manage a business.
Objective 4 : Development of supporting infrastructure of conservation tourism village
Indicators : 1. Existing interpretation pathways including the instrument of Conservation Tourism Village
2. Existing Distribution Map of Biodiversity Potential
3. Existing Center of information and publication on potential of conservation tourism village
4. Existing monitoring tower to observe the behavior of fauna
5. The formation of the traditional arts groups
Activities :
1. Seting Up interpretation pathways including the instrument of Conservation Tourism Village
There are a lot of great tourist sites but they are rarely visited by tourists. This is because tourists find it difficult to access the tourist sites. Therefore the interpretation pathways and instruments that can provide information and guidance for tourists to travel to the site are required. To make the interpretation path, community are involved actively through mutual assistance mechanisms performed in 2 days (weekends) weekly on the determined and planned pathways tracking ecotourism sites
2. Setting Up a Distribution Map of Biodiversity Potential
Distribution Map of Biodiversity Potential is a map showing the location of where the potential for biodiversity is located. This map serves to facilitate tourists to find the existence of a species or other attractions to be observed. This map was made based on the assessment of the potential biodiversity and survey data in form of a map using a geographic information system technology.
3. Setting Up a Center of information and publication on potential of conservation tourism village
Center of information and publication on potential of conservation tourism village is a place to access information about potential tourism village, the facilities available for tourists during visit and public facilities needed by visitors. This information center also functions to publish and to market interesting tourism potential to visit. Seting up this information center is done by creating a semi-permanent buildings (houses on stilts) at the entrance of conservation tourism village.
4. Existing monitoring tower
Banyuwindu has quite high species diversity, particularly for the bird species. Bird high diversity is a potential that can be packaged for Bird Watching tour. Bird Watching Tours have become interesting tourist attraction abroad, and in Indonesia, Bird Watching has started to attract attention. This potential will be more attractive if it is supported by good facility, thus a monitoring tower to help bird watching is required. Monitoring tower also serves to facilitate control of tourist area. It is built on a strategic location in Watu Mountain path that is located higher than the other locations of tourist sties. Monitoring tower is permanently built with a height of 10 meters.
5. Development of Java traditional arts
Development of traditional arts is aimed to foster and to revitalize traditional, local art which is starting to fade due to the modernization. Traditional art is a cultural heritage handed down by the ancestors from generations and is priceless, thus its existence needs to be preserved and maintained. The local traditional arts that could potentially be developed among others are karawitan musical arts, traditional trance dance (kuda lumping) and barong dance.
Potential of local traditional arts is an added value in supporting the development and advancement of conservation tourism village. Besides the traditional arts have values of local wisdom that must be developed. The target groups are arts groups community and local community of Bayuwindu Limbangan village who have special interest on art. The form of the activity will be a weekly routine exercise for young women accompanied by an art teacher and one female singer where people will be trained about techniques or ways to use art equipments and singing in a high pitch following a pentatonic scale (sinden).
Objective 5 : Improving Publication and Promotional Efforts of Conservation Tourism Village
Indicators :
1. Increasing visit to conservation tourism village
2. The publication of conservation tourism village potential through electronic and print media
Activities :
1. Preparation of media publications such as websites, brochures, leaflets, posters
Media publicity is used as one effective strategy in an effort to promote the existence of conservation tourism village to the public. Electronic and printed media publications such as a website, brochures, leaflets, or through print media both locally and nationally will be developed.
Media publications were chosen due to the diversity in backgrounds, that people need different types of media so they are expected to be familiar with and interested in visiting the site.
2. Documenting biodiversity and arts potential in the region in film
Documentation of the region potential is an effort to make a comprehensive documentation of the potential of conservation tourism village covering the potential of biodiversity, environmental conditions, daily activities of local community and traditional art, packaged in a film titled "the story of my journey".
This documentation effort is essential to support the publication and promotion of conservation tourism village thus through this media, more prospective visitors will get to know the description of conditions and eco-tourism activities being offered. That is because through this media, all good potential whether biodiversity potential, community activities and art will be clearly visualized with a persuasive style so that people will be much more impressed and have intention to visit.
The documentation of conservation tourism village is planned after all activities and other preparation are considered ready. The preparation covers construction of supporting infrastructure for the tourism village, setting up of interpretation path, ecotourism packages, a solid institutional and institution that has sufficient capacity.
Documentation of activities is performed by Green Community together with the community in preparing and planning for the movie content (film script). This activity is carried out in conservation tourism village Banyuwindu.
3. Conservation camp
Conservation camp is a promotional effort of conservation tourism village in form of camps followed by high school students in the area of conservation tourism village. In the camp, participants will be introduced to biodiversity potential through interpretation, dissemination efforts of biodiversity conservation as well as media providing environmental education.

5. Kendal and Semarang communities in particular and community in Central Java in general are aware of the existing conservation village of Banyuwindu through publication material that have been spread widely
6. The establishment of the infrastructure supporting the conservation tourism village
7. Increasing community awareness in environmental management based on environmental management principles in accordance to seven enchantments and sustainibility.
