The Karakoç stream in Orhanl? village, Seferihisar is home to many bird species such as the black stork, zitting cisticola, nightingales, bush warbler and the kingfisher. As well as holding importance for the biological richness of the area surrounding the steam it also has great significance in being the source for surface water deposits and underground water. The healthy flow of the stream is crucial for sustainable landuse practices, soil protection and adaptation to climate change. In previous years gravel had been taken from the banks of the steam and the steam bed?s durability was weekend, which has resulted in a faster erosion of the soil compared to natural conditions. The local land owners around the stream have planted, in a traditional way, various trees around the steam such as Blackberry, Willow, Reeds and Poplar to help prevent the erosion of the banks. The Mukhtar, our association and the locals with land around the steam have all come together to draw up a road map to help them to disseminate the traditional rehabilitation and plantation techniques to prevent soil erosion and degradation of land along the river. This project aims to prevent the negative effects of land degradation and soil erosion along the river via promoting and implementing traditional plantation techniques. Five demonstration sites will be developed to rehabilitate and plant local species of plants, bushes and trees around the Karakoç stream. Alongside, this there will be a short film, nature poster and coffee meetings as activities to support the direct landuse protection activities.
