Decrease of pastures degradation, tillage productivity enhancement and conservation of ecological integrity of Ulguli rural area
Fast degradation of pastures around the settlements, water, sowing lands, forage for livestock deficiency lower farms efficiency, decreasing villagers living scale a lot. System of land management needs to be changed to provide people with normal living scale, increase their capacity in both nature conservation and economical activities management for sustainable development.

Project aim:
Decrease pastures degradation around Ulguli aul via use of summer and distant pastures with adherence of science-based scheme of pasturing and creation of forage base for livestock.

Project tasks:
- Introduction and use of seasonal pasturing on summer mountain pastures technology and on distant pasture ?Baikonur? by creation of basic infrastructure and implementing science-based scheme of pasturing
- Increase productivity of irrigated arable fields and dry lands by planting adapted to local conditions permanent herbages for decreasing risks of further land degradation
- Promotion of success experience of distant pastures rational use and restoring degraded lands by local community of Ulguli district

Project results:
- Increased public awareness of Ulguli settlement on the issues of importance of natural resources conservation by holding the field days, trainings, demonstrational seminars and wide dissemination of project experience via mass media, informational materials issuing
- Improved environmental situation in and around the settlement by decreasing erosion processes on round the settlement pastures and due to decreasing intensity and quantity of dust storms
- On 10% decreased animals load on pastures of the main area of Ulguli settlement, created conditions for restoration of degraded herbage on round the settlements pastures
- Increased income and decreased poverty level of not less than 30 families
- Created forage reserve for livestock of Ulguli settlement and increased lands productivity
- On 200 ha of degraded dry land sowed permanent feed crop ? wheat grass
- On 100 ha of degraded arable land sowed permanent feed crop ? Lucerne
- Summer pastures of ?Karasaz? hole and distant pastures of ?Baikonur? managing sustainably on science-based scheme of livestock pasturing with taking into account herbage status
- Increased animal produces outcome more than on 20%, increased safety of young animals and increased quality of animal produces
- 1500 units of livestock transferred to summer pastures in Zailisky Alatau Mountains and distant pasture area ?Baikonur?
Technology mastered, created conditions for rational and long-term use of more than 4500 ha of summer pastures in ?Karasaz? hole and distant pastures of ?Baikonur? area in 50 km from Ulguli settlement.

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
About 10 farms (about 90 individuals) and 10 poor families (about 40 individuals) benefited directly from the project realization. Increasing productivity of pastures lead to increasing animal produces that allows getting more income for local population. Level of livestock sector efficiency allows development of local community with self-support and by sales of hay and seeds for rural district inhabitants.
Capacity - Building Component
Activity of local population, rising their awareness and scale of knowledge caused by the work of initiative group called ?Zhailim commitee?, which was responsible for people informing and promotion of pastures rational management ideas.
