Capacity strengthening of Krappa oil producers in Apoera
This project aims to strengthen the capacity of the Indigenous women who extract oil from the Krappa nuts living in the Apoera village.
The methodolgoy of extracting the oil, is a very old tradition of the Indigenous, passed on from generation to generation. The Centre for Agricultural Research from the university will support this project, training the local people on optimizing the extraction methodology of the krappa oil, supporting in branding and marketing of their products, as well as recruiting young local women to learn this tradition of extracting the oil.

Capacity - Building Component
Raising awareness among local community members on the biodiversity and the unique chararacteristics of the krappa oil, which is very well known for its medicinal use and as natural insecticide.
Marketing and branding training will be important for the local producers of this oil.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The community of Apoera lacks employment opportunities, especially for the women. Also, the community is difficult accessible, by road it can take up to 10 hours by unpaved road from the capital Paramaribo. This project will support mainly the women with income generation.
