Key Outputs, Outcomes and Innovations
? What were the key outputs that make your project stand out and were critical to the success of the project? The participation and acceptance of the project by community members including women and migrants like the Fulani herdsmen and women.
? What would you say are the key innovations that make your project stand out and were critical to successful environmental, social and economic outcomes? The ability to work with community members and address the problem at hand; conducting for the first time in the community the various training on alternative means of livelihoods to both men, women and youth. The ability to carry the press and government officials along was also a huge success.
? How did you engage the local community and key stakeholders to participate in the project? In its bid to get everybody engage and to participate in this project; CaRE-NGO used participatory methods all through the duration (implementation) of this project. So also, series of meetings were held in the office of the District Head together with some key stakeholders in the community and Community Project Implementation Committee (CPIC) where key decisions about the project were always taken. The Community Project Implementation Committee participated in the purchasing of equipment, seedlings and in the monitoring and evaluation.
? What were the principal positive aspects of the project?
? There was large turnout of participants from various communities within the District signifying their acceptance of the project.
? Full participation of community members.
? Community members especially women are now engaged.
? Many community members testified that the project is an eye opener as it has enable them to see the importance of tree planting.
1.1. What were the principal deficiencies of the project? The major deficiencies of this project include; untimely disbursements of funds which resulted to late distribution of seedlings. The vagaries of weather killed some of the plants. There was also overgrazing and bush fire that did harm to the plants.

Please provide high resolution photographs of these products) 1000 Posters/calendar, 120 T-shirts, 120 Face caps, reports, DVDs, photo album, newsletters, banner, seedlings of mango, orange, guava, eucalyptus, tick, neem, pawpaw, palm trees, cashew. Pomade, liquid detergent, jik, izal, shampoo, juice, room freshener, pop corn.

The production of IEC materials using the local dialect was fantastic.

1.6. Direct beneficiaries of Project, Capacity Building and Training/Skill acquisition
18 Describe the immediate and/or direct benefits received by the participants and/or the recipient communities? Their skills for income generating activities were built. Computer literacy was also introduced in the community. The project was able to drag the local politicians to the commissioning of the skills acquisition center. The politicians representing the people of Kurmin Jatau at the national and state assemblies were given the IEC materials concerning the project and their further support was solicited but to no avail.
19 Describe the manner of indirect benefits and the indirect beneficiaries:
The project brought the Kurmin Jatau community and placed it on the world map through internet and international journal publication. The findings of the project shall be presented at a seminar in the United States of America in April, 2014.
Environmental Impact
? What measurable impact has the project had in terms of environmental protection since the beginning of the project? Where possible, please provide statistics and numbers that document the change or impact of the project over time. The problem of land degradation has been reduced drastically in the community as testify by some community members as many of them are not only aware of its dangers in their immediate communities but can see and feel its impact.
? What have been the secondary benefits? Many of the participants trained especially women now have additional income from the pomade, liquid soap, room freshener they make. There are many apprentices especially women and girls in the vocational training center.
? (Biodiversity) Have species, habitat or ecosystems been protected through your work? If so, please describe. Nets and Cactus were used to protect the trees planted. During the M& E when it was discovered that cows were eating the leaves of the trees it was recommended that fresh cow dungs should be smeared to prevent them from eating the leaves of the trees. This is local application of knowledge to solve localized problems.
? How does your group measure the environmental impacts? By frequent asking of questions.
? Discuss the impact of project in the GEF focal area. This project stands out clearly among the projects carried out in the country on reclamation of degraded land.
? State the size of land/forest restored and or protected during this project. 3 hectares of land was restored and protected during this project. This has increased the green environment of the area and also increased the soil fertility used in the production of ginger which is a cash crop produced in the area and arable crops. This has also promoted plantation farming.
? Describe (give facts and figures) the outputs on climate change achieved by the project

? Please indicate the number of sustainably produced biodiversity and agro biodiversity products supported through SGP We saw different varieties of palm trees grown by the farmers during the M& E. For example a palm tree with 12 bunches/heads.

Socio-economic impacts
? What measurable change has there been in local incomes and job opportunities? (change in average household income, job creation, revenues, livelihood diversification, livelihood/income diversification, market access etc) Many of the people trained now carry out small businesses on their own. They have send us to buy raw materials for them from Kaduna and Abuja and also the trainer that came from Jos, came along with some manuals that can guide anyone intending to go into commercial production and most of the participants purchased it.
? Where possible, please provide statistics and numbers that document the change or impact of the project over time.
? Have there been secondary benefits? (Investments in infrastructure, poverty reduction, higher awareness, etc.) Yes. Kurmin Jatau Development Association (KUJADA) has promised to build and expand the skills acquisition centre in the community to admit many more women to acquire skills for self-reliance.
Have revenues from the project been reinvested into school fees, hospitals, local infrastructure, etc? YES. Women beneficiaries who now produce liquid soap for their household consumption and for sale have been able to reinvest the proceed from the sales of this products into their children education through payment of school of school fees and buy of other educational materials like notebooks, pens and textbook. For instance in the words of one of the beneficiary ?Personally, the project has imparted a lot in my life. After the training I started making and selling liquid soap, pomade etc to support the education of my children who are in secondary school.? Another participant also added that, ?I?ve now learned how to sew cloths and it?s been helping me. It has boosted my finances as I now pay my children?s school fees from the proceed I make.?
Policy Impacts
? In what ways has your initiative advocated for policy change? The attention of the Local Government Chairman and the Counselor representing the Fai ward were brought in to participate in the sensitization against land degradation. Also, The Senator and House of Representative member were written letters telling them about the menace of land degradation in the area and the need for them to contribute in solving the problem. Kaduna State Ministry of Environment also participated in the project throughout. Journalists were also involved.
? Has there been success in influencing policy at what level (community, institution, municipal, regional) and what were the critical factors that made that success possible? To some degree; at least in the community level.
? What have been the barriers and the successes removing these barriers? Inability to get support from the local politicians and policy makers. However, the letter written to Kaduna State Ministry of Environment yielded some positive result with their involvement in the project and the level of support received.
? Have there been any regional (subnational) or national policies or laws that were enacted or changed as a result of your project? No.
? (Biodiversity specific) Has your community engaged in the planning, implementation or review of National Biodiversity Strategic Action Plans? No. But we shall be very willing to do so if our capacity is built.
? (Climate Change specific) Has your community engaged in the planning, implementation or review of the National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPAs)?
