Community Conservation of Natural Resources in the Ehehleni Area
Ehehleni area is part of Mzimba south in the Northern Malawi where degradation of natural resources and food insecurity has enhanced poverty in the area. The big loss leads to serious declining of soil fertility as most of the top soil is washed away.Much of the cause of the soil erosion is cutting down of trees which leaves the land bare and hence the wind and running water easily remove top soil.
Depletion of trees because of increasing human population in relation to available resources.Soil erosion and declining of soil fertility is high beacause of not following modern methods of farming.Soil erosion is also high cecause of overgrazing and cultivation on slopes and riverbeds. There is great lack of knowledge on issues concerning environmental problems by the civil society. The traditional shifting cultivation for instance is a direct contributing factor to deforestation.
Projects main objective
The projects main objective is to control soil erosion as an agent of land degradation that pauses the biggest threat to sustainable agriculture and also leads to contamination of water resources.
