Community Participatory Sustainable Development Demonstration at Seagrass Special Protected Area in Lingshui Xin Cun and Li'an Harbor
Main Problems:
1. severe degradation of seagrass bed ecosystem due to marine pollution
2. Algal eucheuma striatum growth on which local community neighboring seagrass bed protected area relies, is declining due to marine pollution. Locals income decreased which results in increasing intensity of catching fish, shrimp, crab, shellfish and so on. This has impacted the healthy growth of seagrass bed.
3.lack of technique and action for seagrass bed restoration and increasing biomass and biodiversity of seagrass bed; the seagrass protected area cannot exert its advantage of resource in the process of constructing Hainan as the International Tourist Destination.
Project activities/solutions:
1.demonstration on seagrass bed restoration
2.develop traditional algel euchema striatum planting
3.develop alternative livelihood??seagrass eco-tourism
4.outreach on marine protectionat community
5.establishment of specific regional management mechanism for seagrass
6.seagrass bed monitoring and benefit investigation
Anticipated results/outcomes:
1. about 1 ha. of seagrass conservation demonstration site established
2. about 5 ha. of Algal eucheuma striatum demonstration site established and local people's income increased 4000RMB
3. at least one travel agency start seagrass eco-tourism
4. about 180 people have the knowledge of seagrass conservation; about 60000 people's awareness on marine environmental protection enhanced
5. a specific regional seagrass management mechanism recognized by local community and government
