Main problems:
Currently, regarding chemicals risk prevention, government work focuses on industries but farmers at rural area are lack of awareness. relevant department is lack of capacity of monitoring and management which results in increasing risk and threat to human health and biodiversity safety and surrounding ecosystem function decreased.

Mentougou is an important ecological conservation area in Beijing. it's important for protect ecosystem safety of Beijing to raise public awareness on chemicals risk and solve obsolete pesticides exposure problem, which is also can provide lessons learned to other rural areas in China.

Project activities/solutions:
1.select demonstration village
2.organize university students volunteers to conduct investigation on rural area chemicals situation
3.outreach and education on chemical risk prevention and biodiversity conservation for local farmers
4.purchase containers which fit with environmental sound management requirement
5.compile 'Guideline on environmental sound management of obsolete chemicals for rural household '
6.project inception meeting
7.outreach and education, especially waste classification and reduction to avoid dioxin from burning waste
8. collect mercury-contained products and send to treatment company
9. project wrap-up meeting and municipal level press conference

Anticipated results/outcomes:
1. about 500 households participated project and 250kg obsolete chemicals get environmental sound treatment;
2. about 250 people trained on chemical risk and prevention
3. about 50 fluorescent lamps are collected and got environmental sound treatment, reduce 1g mercury release;
4. 'Guideline on environmental sound management of obsolete chemicals for rural household' compiled;
5. reduce 5 kg waste for each household to avoid waste burning and dioxin release risk;
6. public and media are aware of chemical risk.
