Participatory Integrated Management Capacity Building on Land Degradation in the Three Gorges Dam Region
Main problems:
The southwest China is the typical area with serious land degradation due to dense population and karst erosion. The trend of land degradation is getting obvious under the interaction of vulnerable ecological and geographic environment and human activity impacts. This problem is outstanding in the area of Three-gorges Dam. With the construction of the dam, large farmland is submerged and large number of population are allocated on the spot, which exacerbate the tension between human and land and accelerate the land degradation in the already overloaded area of three-gorges dam. This not only bring negative impact to industry and agriculture along Yangtze River basin but also directly threaten the locals' life and production.
Project activities/solutions:
1.change traditional afforestation and tending technology, promote coniferous and broad-leaved forest to increase biodiversity
2.restructure agriculture and forestry according to local conditions, improve degraded land.
3.upgrade low- and medium-yield farmland
4.conduct research and promotion training on measures of water and soil conservation and establish monitoring facilities
5.develop stock raising and mixed farming, explore good-quality non-timber production(beekeeing, medicinal plant), develop small scale community low-carbon industry.
6.regenerate ecological culture, conduct publicity, communication and special topic seminar and workshop, raise public awarness on ecological conservation, develop environmental friendly community.
Anticipated results/outcomes:
1.effectively restore degraded land in project site, biodiversity is increased notablely;
2. locals livelihood is improved, their capacity of climate change mitigation and adaptation is enhanced; 3. community's ecological conservation awareness is raised, they actively participate in construction of environmental friendly community, eliminate the use of POPs production;
4. positively drive neighbourhood community to prevent land degradation
