Forest and Watershed Protection through Cardamom Plantation and Fish Conservation
NyotOu is the extreme-northern district of Laos which is close to China and Vietnam. Its territory lies within the source of the Nam Ou River, one of biggest tributary of the Mekong River. The terrain is mountainous and inhabited by many different ethnic groups (Yao, Kheu, Akha, Lolo, Ho) who depend on shifting cultivation for their livelihood. Access roads have been constructed only recently (since 2000) and compared to other districts there is still a lot of forest and natural resources left making it high in biodiversity. It is one of the 47 poorest districts of the Lao PDR and as such a priority area for development and also poverty reduction programme.
