Pygmies women handcraft enhancement and forest conservation in Lokolama village
Pygmies women handcraft enhancement and forest conservation in Lokolama village
The Eungu sector in Ingende Territory is a densely forested region rich in biodiversity. It is close to the Salonga Park. Carbonization is widely used by men as well as by women to rapidly get needed money for family needs. Special timbers of good economic value such as Limba are destroyed causing more forest deforestation and degradation in the area.
The autochthon women are skilled in a variety of handcrafts of unequal competitiveness in the region. They use forest non ligneous products to interweave a material that people use to cover beds. The way they do it is a special cultural stamp, a brand to be valued for economic purpose.
By enhancing handcrafts production and marketing techniques, autochthon women will improve handcrafts quality and quantity, leading to the increase in their monthly household income. Such a happening is a way to poverty reduction. This can cool down aggressive use of wood and any other endangered species in the forest around, to meet the survival and basic needs of their families.
This phase will target a group of 100 women in ten villages, taking them through enhancement process of making artistic material fit for multipurpose social and economic use. Teenagers, young girls and young men will be involved to prepare for the sustainability of the process.
The marketing of valuable materials will promote the use of non ligneous forest products against carbonization and prohibited fishing techniques in rivers nearby. The increase in household income will further strengthen participants? commitment to lessen pressure on deforestation.
