COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN MANAGEMENT OF BIODIVERSITY RESOURCES AND NATURAL FOREST IN AND AROUND LUKANGA WETLAND AREA
Development from People to People (DAPP) in Zambia is registered as a Welfare Society under the Societies Act of Zambia since 19th June, 1990. The organization runs a number of projects in 22 districts of Zambia reaching out to close to 1 million people with intervention and information. The projects are innovative, comprehensive, and cost effective and deal with some of the major social and economic issues in Zambia such as environment, education, health, HIV/AIDS, orphans, community development, agriculture and social development.
DAPP in Zambia is currently running the following projects:
1. Child Aid (integrated community development)
- Central Province: Chibombo, Mkushi, Serenje, Kapiri Mposhi and Nampundwe
- Southern Province: Monze, Kalomo and Choma
- Northern Province: Mpika, Mporokoso, Kasama, Luwingu, Chinsali and Luwingu
- Luapula Province: Samfya, Nchilenge and Chienge
- Copperbelt Province: Chingola
2. HOPE Humana (HIV/AIDS prevention and care) in Ndola, Kabwe, Kapiri Mposhi, Kaoma, Mongu, Senanga
3. Children's Town (OVC Support) in Malambanyama Chibombo District
4. TCE - Total Control of the Epidemic (HIV/AIDS prevention) in Mazabuka and Monze
5. Farmers Club Projects in Chingola, Masaiti, Kapiri Mposhi and Mkushi (Copperbelt and Central Provinces)
6. Fundraising through Clothes and Shoes Sales.
Member of the Federation Humana People to People: DAPP in Zambia is a co-founder and member of the Federation for Associations connected to the International HUMANA PEOPLE TO PEOPLE Movement, and has access to a large amount of know-how and technical assistance in programming, implementation and monitoring.
Staff: DAPP in Zambia has a total of 450 staff of which 52 are in management positions. Its head quarter is based in Ndola and is well manned with qualified and experienced staff and has a good infrastructure, communication tools and other equipment needed to facilitate management and operation of the - many DAPP projects throughout the country. The organization has a good track record with staff retention and has staff on both management and implementation levels that have gained vast and valuable experiences over many years in various project approaches.
2. Project?s main objective
2.1 To conserve biodiversity and to improve management of the Lukanga Wetland and the area surrounding it through community involvement.
3. Specific objectives
3.1 To increase the capacity within 50 villages surrounding the Lukanga Wetland to take charge of improved land and natural resource management and to diversify livelihood options to reduce poverty and improve living conditions.
3. Implementation strategy
3.1 Strengthen community based structures and service delivery systems d to take a leading role in environmental protection and livelihood development
3.2 Increase protection of Bio Diversity and other natural resources in and around the Lukanga Swamps
3.3 Increase household income and food security among households in the target area
3.4 Improve health and improved living conditions in the target area
3.5 Document and share best practices in community involvement
