Monitoring and ichthyofauna revival in Mlyniv water reserve to decrease anthropogenic pressure
Monitoring and ichthyofauna revival in Mlyniv water reserve to decrease anthropogenic pressure
Ecosystems and communities in Ukraine have become vulnerable to the forces of climate change beyond climatic variability through a climate-induced reduction in resources and unsustainable resource use. As both short-term carbon stores and much longer-term sinks, it is important to maintain the integrity of ecosystems so they can function as both an instrument of mitigation and be used sustainably to support human life. Maintaining the size and integrity of these ecosystems through techniques such as restoration, improved farming and fishing techniques and reforestation enable them to withstand some climate effects, maintain biodiversity, and reduce water shortages.

The project aims to restore in Mlyniv reservoir ichtio complex the state of ecological balance, and gain a priority in Western Ukraine, as the demonstrating center for sustainable use of natural resources and contribute to spreading CC adaptation measures and capacities. The Project will increase community resilience to CC, promote sound water management, improve and contribute to the problem of changes in fisheries habitats in Mlyniv water reservoir as well as in the other lakes, Rivers of Rivne and neighboring regions. . The present project consists of:
- Monitoring hydro ecosystems of Mlyniv reservoir under strong anthropogenic use of native ichthyofauna;
- Recovery of fish stocks through introductions into Mlyniv reservoir of young fish species.
Activities under the project :
1. Study of ichthyofauna of Mlyniv environmental reservoirs, establishment of basic opportunities for its improvement.
2. Publication of scientific and educational publication "ichthyofauna of Mlyniv reservoir under anthropogenic stress.
3. The universe of young fish species (carp, herbivorous fish) in order to restore strong population and consumption of excessive amounts of feed elements (primarily phytoplankton, zooplankton and macrophytes) leading to increased eutrophication of reservoir processes
4. Wide awareness raising campaign among target communities.
The project will provide an opportunity to attract public attention, public authorities, local government, the scientific elite to the problems of biodiversity and ichthyofauna in Mlyniv reservoir. Local residents and Dubno regional organization of fishermen ?Robinson? will be involved as volunteers for the protection of fish stocks tank. The main partners within the project are residents of neighboring villages, village councils, universities and NGOs.
